CLM 2023 Event thread - live updates

Post by BILLY BEAN »

 we Not sure I should even start a thread on our little trip to CLM and beyond as it is a commitment to continue it with pictures ( not my forte) and more words when I should be enjoying myself. So apologies in advance if the posts are truncated. Big word.
There are five aircooled 911s and an Escort going in our group. That is Escort in the shape of a car not some paid assistant even though one might come in useful. It's a hot Escort which has just had some work completed on it. So down to "the wire" in terms of departure. I will try not to mention that particular vehicle again as this is a Porsche gig.
We are a bunch of mates (plus a birthday guest who gets transported every where in the Escort).
Oops said it again. Our little WhatsApp group known as Cars and Cabbages ( don't ask) has more than five members but a couple of them including The Viking have gone off radar. Possibly the Viking has gone on his world wide rape and pillage tour? Some of us are in our mid 70s whilst the youngster is in his 50s.
Preparations have not gone particularly well for a few of us:
Although I qualify for parking in the Orange sector at CLM I have been provided with Bleu sector parking. The ignominy of parking with Cayenes and the like is too much to bare. An email to CLM organisers in my very best French has been greeted with silence. Could be interesting trying to park. One of our members decided to replace the idle running jets in his carbs. Not noted for his mechanical prowess how do you think that worked out? Well to quote " It ran like a dog". Which if it had been a greyhound it might be regarded as a success. Alas it was not. A three legged ancient mongrel more like. Some toing and froing to a specialist did not get it sorted initially. We then got a report it was fixed and something to do with a "retard". Definately. Not satisfied with the carb issue the next issue, yesterday, was the absence of brake lights. Sorted though. Sigh of relief.

We have a range of personalities with some always seeing sunshine even though it is p×ssing down and others who, probably due to advancing years, are shall we say, see sh×t everywhere. This brings us to trying to establish a name for our adventure as it goes on, in a gentle kind of way, after CLM.
Mr 'Sunshine': A really wonderful road adventure. Or Ray of Light Tour.
The mechanical genius: The Retard Tour. Or
Running like a Dog Trip.
Mr V Negative: We are all F×cked Tour.
And my contribution?
The Trepidation Tour. To explain. I am going in the ST Clone which has been fraught with 'little' problems since the finish of the build.
For those not familiar I will give a brief recap, if I can remember everything
Starting problems- starter and cable related.
Water leak into passenger footwell. Poor seal fit.
Fire and some toasted wiring. Short on pedal box.
Noisy 5th gear despite rebuilt box. Replace gear.
Awful gear change. Remove short shift.
Oil line coupling failure. Crap crimping of fitting.
Rough running at 2000 RPM. Rotor arm arcing.
Failed speedo, rev counter and oil level gauge despite rebuilt instruments.
Indeed with the above background I go out in the car anticipating a problem. Although the journey of 108 miles to Classics and the Clubhouse was uneventful.
To be continued...............maybe.

Billy you’ve saved me a job 8)

Set off from Yorkshire bit later than planned due to work . Hateful drive down the country in convoy with Phil to collect DDKer Simon from near Cambs. The bridge was surprisingly good . First major distance done seemingly in one piece Now settling down for a drink and waiting for some other ddkers to arrive

For next time: Simpson is far more attractive than Ashford.

Keep your eyes peeled for the Red 356 Speedster, piloted by the Stephens (father and son) Team under the banner `Red Nicar racing`
They have been VERY quick in previous years (I do hope that that has not put the kiss of doom on them).

Have a great trip, and remember to cheer on the Frazer Nash Shelsley of Mark Morgan and Simon Edwards, one of very few (if not the only) cars that actually ran at Le Mans in period taking part this weekend.......

You can see in those pics why they call it a safety colour James!

Have a great trip everyone, keep updates coming. Stopping at Rouen or Honfleur?

Mike
