914 restoration project

Post by 10DJM »

So guys where would be the best place to find a 914 project ?
I've finished one or two Porsche restorations in the past and fancy getting into a 914 now.
Cheers

Greatworth Classics have an original 2.0 which is more of a running and driving project, though worth a call regarding pricing as it's listed lower on facebook marketplace (heading is '1972 Porsche 911')- https://greatworthclassics.co.uk/1972-porsche-914-4

The 'UK914' facebook group is quite active too, so perhaps try a wanted ad on there.

Yea .. saw that one.
There is one on eBay for £9995 . Nice guy selling it but it
but it is infact a1972 1.7 original colour Willow Green.
Could be a money pit. Any thoughts?

You mean this one?

I think the remit is buy the best you can for your budget, not something cheaper that is going to cost you a lot more in restoration and work. Remember these cars are now 50 years old, and unless someone has done some work on them, they will require attention.

Always best to get someone who knows them to have a look at it for you, or pay for an inspection, which will be money well spent.

Have a read over the below restoration thread by Darren C, as it's very thorough and shows the level of work required for a typical cheaper US import that's been off the road for a few years.

Also take a good look at the various models and years to consider what you really want and like if sticking to originality - interiors, engines, and bumpers were all changed over the years.

In terms of sourcing one try Greatworth Classics as they seem to regularly import cars. There is also Joop Stolze in the Netherlands who always has a selection available. Something like this could be a nice project in terms of being complete and a desirable 2.0 for reasonable money https://www.stolzeclassiccars.nl/aanbod ... ltr-blauw/

The Greatworth one looks good value compared to the eBay and Dutch one. Both of those look like they’d consume a huge amount of cash and time to get to an acceptable standard. Good 914’s do come up across the year and as mentioned the UK914 Facebook group is active and often gets first notice of a sale. Personally I’m not an originality or concours fan but if you are then the market is even smaller. Some parts on a 914 are VW sourced but equally several are specific and therefore harder (more expensive) to get, so factor that in when looking at cars. Kevin Clarke is the register secretary for PCGB and is a fantastic source of 914 information. They are great cars, but I’m biased having owned mine for over 20 years over which time I’ve spent more than I’ll ever get back for her but have no intention of ever selling! Good luck with your search.

Thanks guys... the search goes on.
I've been in touch with Kev and Angus and got some great advice.
I'm well aware of the restoration process and all the parts searching/fabrication is all part of the fun.
Final value is never a major concern although you have to remain sensible throughout.
Just love DDK BTW.

Sorted.. got a 1975 1.8 Laguna Blue Californian car in very solid condition.
Interior needs redoing but running well on original FI.
AC is VPC and needs reconnecting and recharging.
Will probably need a respray too due to the a number of dings and minor surface rust.
Lots to do so going to be busy . :)
