Not always, there’s a deeply anal thread on the 911registry about tags (that Darren contributes heavily to :):)) that shows a few without the hyphen.

Well there you go. Probably down to who was stamping them that day in the factory.

Gents,

So 415 is the actual paint code - what do the 9 and the 2 denote?

Gary - how much do I owe you for the plate and postage?

Cheers,

Al.

It is great that John is able to stamp the paint tags for us. One does have to be careful choosing the correct code to stamp though. One example is the "1818 G" tag at the beginning of the thread. It looks nicely stamped, but I have never seen an original 1818 with G suffix, I have many examples of "-L". Second example is the "8484-9-2" tag; this is essentially a bad combination of formats. The xxyy-z format was a 1970 & 1971 format almost exclusively. The xxx-y-z format has been in general use since 1972 model year. I have never seen a combination of the two formats. Yes, I do know that the CoA or equivalents continue to use the xxyy code format for paint codes past 1971, but that is NOT the code that is found on the badge. 84 could be code 324 or 334 (blue metallic) depending on the model year ans the actual VIN because this is one of many metallics that tended to have mid year code changes. The changes in code were probably due to formula changes by the manufacturer; the metallic flake was changed at least once, and pigment changes were also common. The clear coat on the metallic colours was probably changing as well; metallic colours of the period had a very short service lifespan before a repaint was required. Don't forget that Karmann bodied cars had a Karmann badge. Porsche cars in 1971 transitioned to and from a decal for much of the year; apparently the has an adhesive issue and tended to fall off, thus prompting a return to the riveted tag.
I have studied the paint codes for some 20 years now, and may be able to offer advice on the correct code to stamp on the badge. Likewise, I will gladly accept documentation of any original badges/decals, and associated VIN's.

Dave messaged me with some clarification on paint tag codes. I asked Dave to add to the thread.

So a big thank you to Dave for taking the time to add his knowledge to this thread. Very much appreciated and I’m sure of great value to our members.

Kind regards.

Just been stamping some more tags.

I’ve been asked to try stamping a little lighter which I’m doing but it comes with the risk of only stamping part of the number.

Still learning.

Note this last one still has the blue plastic protective cover so will be a sharper stamp once it’s removed.

John, I will be very happy if mine looks like any of the above.

If I ever go to sell my car and someone says, 'Well I'd buy it but honestly I think that paint tag has been stamped a little heavily so sorry but no sale'. I'll enjoy running over them repeatedly...

But don't tell anyone I said that.

Cheers for that Al. I’ve got yours stamped today too. I’m not 100% happy with the stamping of the 9. It’s a bit light on the tail. I could have tried to double stamp the 9 but figured that was asking fit trouble. I’ll send it over and see what your thoughts are. I know that there are variations from factory and indeed Gary’s original tag had a very light 2.

Anyway see what you think and let me know. Obviously if your not happy I’ll stamp another for you.

Also can you send me your address and I’ll pop it into the post.

Kind regards.

Here is a correct original badge.

The Carbone example appears to be more correct.
