Re: M&W 550 Overhaul...
To make it all look more convincing, why not buy a set of these spun-aluminium 'fake' brake drum covers that conceal all the nasty adaptors and four-stud bits, giving the effect of a set of original 356/550-style aluminium brake drums. They're obtainable from Rose Passion, CB Performance, Sierra Madre and others, and look very convincing when in place.
Re: M&W 550 Overhaul...
Hi Keith
Thanks for the heads up! Theses where my planned finale purchase, once I know it all fits and that I won’t need more spacers for the ‘skins’ to clear the four stud wheel-bolts and that the tyres will not foul the bodywork. It all works on paper and with my man maths!
All the best

Re: M&W 550 Overhaul...
Hi All
Well, the studs from Germany have arrived (no sniggering at the back) and so far it all fit's together. As this isn't always the case so I'd ordered an extra of each stud, nut and bolt, I guess this time round I'll have a few spares.
With the tyres being fitted as I type and the brake covers (as recomended by Mr Sume) now on the way from the US it looks as if the wheels are pretty much done (well cost wise at least)!
Not going to talk about the electrics, but I would love to know how it got an MOT (just days before it arrived) with the 'Main' & 'Dip" beam wired together on the same pole of the switch and no earth conection on one of the side lights...
Guess I should have checked it over properly and not trusted the MOT!
We live and learn.
Have a great weekend one and all!

No real progress save for the wheels now only need the ‘drum skins’ (currently in transit) to be finished.
Nice period look to the new tyres...

Looks great, love your alloys! Are you using 4x130 hub adaptors, if so how was the clearance on the wheel bolts?
All the best

Re: M&W 550 Overhaul...
Hi guys
As it's only raining a bit I thought I'd test fit my new wheels...
I'm hoping to use 10mm spacers in order for the IMPI 5x205 adaptors to clear the front calipes.
The spacer beteeen the adaptor and the wheel rim will allow the 'drum skins' to clear the wheel bolts...
Orignal 30mm spacer compared with the new 10mm. With another 20mm (ish) of adaptor/spacer/skin plus the difference in off-set of the 'Wide 5's', coupled with narrower but taller & rounder tyres make for a tight fit.
Well it all fits and passes the fat fingers clearance test even with a fat bloke (me) sat/pouncing on the wings...
NB. the car is still sitting on the jack in this pic.
Hopefully next week she will be off to the workshop and someone who knows what they're doing will get started on sorting out the real problems (and stop me messing about).
All the best

It is worth the effort if you persevere, keep the faith.. mine has been a work in progress for years... sort of finished now. Super quick type 4 race motor, just had the 5 speed box rebuilt. It is epic now. Worth the effort.

Re: M&W 550 Overhaul...
Hi Anta
Thanks for the clarification re the hubs, I may revisit the front hubs & rear drums once the car's back on the road...
Also a big thanks for the encouragement it comes at a much needed time!

I honestly get it. I have been so close to selling and getting a 993 so many times!alfacat wrote:Hi Anta

My rear indicator is the latest thing to break which sounds simple but it is a trick custom LED piece of magic that glows yellow through the red lens...
What I can say is on that morning (for me normally after 70 hours at work) when I go through the starting routine, fire it up, ease it away and down a lane....with the clunk of the gear shift, the pop as I lift off then the exhaust catching me up, the rush as the carbs open and the sound goes to 11 on the amp......grown men on the pavement dropping shopping bags and spinning 180 degrees....
Dude, experience that before you sell. It is the best. All that said a 993 or post 74 911.... hmmm
