Re: Getting my gears back...
James, I agree.
Mine had the remains of a 'patch' on the thread, a dry form of Loctite.
I did not have a wired head either, so simply replaced the original with a drop of red Loctite, so almost welded into place!
Never ever come loose, 60K miles.
Maybe the early cars were different?

Re: Getting my gears back...
The Haynes manual talks of lock wire. I'd be quite happy with loctite. But I have lock wire and the requisite pliers, so that's what looks right to do!911hillclimber wrote: Maybe the early cars were different?

No, if you have the right bits then use them of course, Porsche thought it needed it!

I don't think it's that bolt James. That is the bolt in the rear coupling I think. The offending bolt is the front one under the gearstick with a square head.

Perhaps I have a swb gear shift mechanism. Might make my car more valuable?Lightweight_911 wrote:.

How early is your '69 car - what's the chassis number (or build date) ?

Re: Getting my gears back...
My 73 has the same conical bolt with the plastic anti-vibration patch as James' picture.
Once it has been out a few times, the effectiveness is compromised, hence me loctiting mine in (only the shifter end)
Not sure I would want to get it back out after using red Loctite, but no need to remove it from the shift rod to change the bush.

I prefer to use blue Loctite - makes removal easier911hillclimber wrote: Not sure I would want to get it back out after using red Loctite ...

Re: Getting my gears back...
I'm referring to the bolt at the front, under the shift lever, gearbox end is simply done up tight.
Blue certainly easier, don't use the stuff much but the red certainly is secure...

and here is the bolt in question...
I love that the lockwire hole is bevelled as well.

That's a very early '69 model built just after the '68 summer break so that's probably why it still uses the lock-wired version ...
