Recharge your phone in a 6v car

Post by neilbardsley »

Getting the 356 ready for when we can tour again. We always navigate by phone so a charger in the car would be helpful. I noticed that many charges only supply about 5v. So I found a macro usb connector that had a positive/negative wire at the back.

Then I disconnected the live 6v wire from the back of the lighter. Connected this to the red wire and earthed the black wire.

All for £11. £8 was postage.

I also learnt about not touching any metal after you have soldered a wire onto it.ImageImageImage

Hi Neil,

I had the same issue, As you mention USB only outputs 5 volts therefore there is enough voltage in a 6 volt car. There are a couple of options; The first is to buy a cigatette lighter adapter which modulates the voltage electronically rather than by ratio. I bought a 12 volt multi adapter from Halfords which has a curly cable that plugs into a standard cigarette lighter socket, and then provides 2 standard cigarette lighter outputs plus 2 USB sockets. Because this modulates electronically it provides 5 volts the USB outlets. SO I simply plug it into my 356's 6 volt cigarette lighter then plug in a lightning usb lead for my iphone and hey presto, it works just fine. Alternatively there are 12 volt steppers which take a 6 volt input, then step it up to 12 volts, you can then wire a standard 12 volt cigarette lighter socket to it, plug in a usb adapter then you will end up with a 5 volt usb out put. I prefer the first option. I ended up wiring it in to one of the unused fog light fuse ( fuses 5 & 6) on the car then fixing the adapter up behind the dashboard with 2 USB cables already plugged in so that both myself and a passenger could charge a USB device

My cigarette lighter was old and knacker so didn't ground while enough to charge hence I looked for a more direct solution

That is incredibly helpful 356Monkey. Do you have a link for the Lightning cable you bought.
I have literally just purchased a 356A and thought I would take a look here to see if anyone had figured out an easy way to keep their iphone charged especially as waze eats the phone battery. Many thanks
