Still a few minor bits missing. Engine, gearbox, that sort of thing.

Well, I did test the fuel system. As discussed, the plan in the absence of an engine was to connect the outlet to the return at the filter, and test it recirculating:


Good news: the pipes and hoses are all fine, the pump works without strange noises, and a healthy volume of fuel seems to be pumping around.
Bad news: yet another unplanned fluid spill on the garage floor. The allegedly refurbed pump is pissing fuel from somewhere. Gah!

I've ordered some replacement O-rings in the hope that it's a simple fix up at the pump end (as opposed to the motor end). There are two O-rings there, easy enough to access (4 screws, which I'm sure won't be corroded at all...). But if it's not leaking from there, the whole thing needs to come apart, which seems to involve a fair bit of faffing about bending back retaining tabs, de-soldering connectors etc. I'm told there's no guarantee of success; some of them just seem to leak no matter what you try.

I also have a minor head injury, which often seems to happen when I work under a car. And no engine. And a total of one working brake caliper currently fitted (others all leaked, at least one of which was due to my own incompetence).

So, not going so well this week.

It is good to know I am not the only incompetent one!
remember that a lot of us are not professionals and that we learn by making mistakes
When I fitted my brakes after a refurb I could not work out why the fronts just would not work. I flushed the fluid , changed the master cylinder, etc .I phoned a local Porsche mechanic in desperation. He could not see the car for 2 weeks but kindly talked me through what I had done etc. Finally he asked if the calipers were the correct way up, with the bleed nipple uppermost- he had made that mistake before.Sure enough the bleed nipple was low down which meant I did not get all the air out of the caliper. 30 mins later I had a car that had proper braking!
I will not make that error again

seems par for the course, i too have an injury sustained this weekend after fitting the engine. Gearbox held in with 1 bolt which i backed off to allow some movement to line up the second bolt hole. Backed it off too much, bolt fell out whilst i was under it, engine pivoted on the mounting bar, whacked on the top of the head by the pivoting full mass of the gearbox and the engine, only stopped by the gearbox jamming against the scissor lift frame.....

I retired to the kitchen to recover - Have a lump on my head and a sore neck - and to ponder my own stupidity and how differently that could have turned out.....

I have pre-booked some expert help with fitting my engine and gearbox. Hoping those major bits arrive before my expert retires / all cars are banned / the dying sun expands to engulf the solar system. Etc.

Engine builders:
Such a familiar story in motorsport circles too except the time scales are much longer...
Good luck in getting it ALL back, buy a stand and a few tools and DIY using the Dempsey book, really is not difficult.

You are then in full control with a massive support from DDK for service sourcing if you need any.

That is sad to hear Richard......this is meant to be 'fun' stuff!

These projects are a rollercoaster as they are and no doubt painful without the support of good people!
