Earls Court Show, 1968. Still looking for the third 911.

Post by Arfor Jones »

To continue Lee Durrant's thread on this subject last year, to re-cap, Porsche had on display at the show three of the first LWB cars:

911 S
911 E
911 T

The owners and location of the 911 S and the 911 T are known, but the 911 E is proving elusive. The car is currently taxed, so it must be out there somewhere... The registration number is VYE 7G and its colour is light ivory.

Does anybody know this car?

This is not an attempt to buy the car - it's just for historical interest and to verify that all three cars are still alive and well after 50 years.

Good news:

Not long after submitting my post above, I received a PM from the owner of the car, who is a member of DDK!

The car is in excellent order and is still fitted with its original Sportomatic transmission, which must make it something of a rarity.

Great to know that all three cars are still out and about, more than 50 years since they were on display in London.

There can't be many other car manufacturers who can make a similar claim.

Be great for one of the magazines to get them together and recreate a pic or two

Be amazing if you could turn up a picture of the Earl’s Court Porsche stand from 1968. I’ve looked over the last few years for any magazines or news footage which may have 64-73 pictures of stands but there seems to be everything out there except Porsche.

Regards
Mike

I was at the show but didn't take any photos ...

Anybody contacted Porsche Cars GB to see if they have any pictures of their stand ?

If you are looking for a “full house”, Arfor, they had a black 912 at the show too.

My search for photographs began soon after my return to the UK, which was several years ago now, but after up-turning every stone that I could think of, I have long since come to the sad conclusion that in all probability there are no photographs of the Porsche stand. I have come across a couple of photographs of the general area of the 1968 show, but no photographs of a particular stand or car. Yes, I have asked Porsche Cars GB, and I managed to make contact with Porsche Archive, but neither of them had any photographs.

There was indeed a black 912 on the stand, but as Ian McLeod mentioned on Lee Durrant's thread last year, the car hasn't been taxed since 1991, so there seems little prospect of finding that car although there is a small possibility that the car's registration number could have been changed.
