Engine lid release tube

Post by PeterK »

The tube in which the engine release cable runs was almost non-existent on my SC Targa. About £60 for RosePassion.

Has anyone used anything else to replace the pipe ?

Should I try micro-bore (8mm ??) copper (corrosion resistant, would need brazing or silver soldering onto the B-post, etc and probably not resistant to wear by the steel inner cable), stainless steel (as per copper, but better wear resistant) or should I stay with mild steel. In the latter case, any suggestions for suppliers.

How did ypiu connect to the B-post - braze, weld, silver solder, bulkhead connector, something else ????
Thx
Peter

My plan (as mine is also rusted out) is to get some mild steel tube from B&Q.

Ultra high tech solution!

OK, so bought some thin wall tube, both 8mm (same as the end in the engine compartment) and 10mm (same as the hole in the B-post/striker panel).

As the original tube is sound in the engine bay and is neatly brazed where it goes through the rear inner wing, my plan (OK, my first bodge ?) is to trim the rusty end off the tube under the rear wing and join on new tube from there to the B-post. My 10mm is 1mm wall thickness, so I can butt two 8mm dia tubes together and use the 10mm as a sleeve.

My next issue is how the tube attaches to the B-post. The good news is that I have the pull handle and cable in the loft in a box. The less good news is that I've been up there and turned the boxes around, but can't immediately lay my hands on the handle.

So,
Q1 - is it 8mm dia tube from the B-post, or a length of 10mm first ? If 10mm first , where does it become 8mm
Q2 - how does the tube attach to the B-post - is it welded, brazed or JB welded on ? or is there some coupling thing ?

Thanks
Peter

Whichever one it is I think it’s the same all the way through.

I’m not near my car to check, but here are some pics from a Barry resto, so I’m assuming it’s right!

I am sure it's the same size all the way and brazed at both ends and a couple of places on the the inner wing!

Thanks for that - 8mm it is then.
I don't have brazing facilities and now that the wing is back on, there's no way I could weld all the way around it anyway. Might try tacking it in on below and use silver solder, or if that fails JB Weld, on the top.
