Lovely - only thing I don't like is the style of the number plate ...

I bought my first new car when I lived in Hurlingham. My company car had been a boring run of the mill but reliable 1600 Ford Cortina and Ford were advertising the Capri as
' The car you always promised yourself '. Len Street Motors was my local Lotus dealer but they also sold Opel's. I made appointments to test drive a 2.0 ltr Capri
and a 1.9 Opel Manta Berlinetta.
I cut short the test drive in the Capri and told the rep it was not my kinda car. He looked knowingly at me and said he fully understood.
It felt just like my old Cortina wearing a party frock. Cheap, clunky and crude with soggy primitive suspension - and it was brand new !
Off to the Lotus showroom where my cheery ex racing driver salesman asked if I was given the chance to actually drive the Capri ?
"Yes" I said.
" Suppose we ought to do the paper work for the Manta now then ? " he chuckled and tossed me the keys for the test drive.
He knew I was going to sign . The Opel was everything that the Capri wasn't. Tight, responsive and beautifully balanced. Even the slightly smaller 1.9 ltr
engine felt smoother and quicker. The build quality was also far superior.
I obviously bought the Opel and was so impressed with the brand that I upgraded to a 2.5 Commodore and then a 2.8 GSE Coupe.
I do 'get ' the attraction of the tarted up Escorts and Mexico's but why has the Capri ( Had 6 in my street alone ) suddenly been elevated to ' greatness ' ?
At the time I couldn't afford the rare Broadspeed Manta Turbo, but it would make decent classic car today.
