1972 car - Restoring the "Oilklappe" parts
Hi all
I'm about to buy a really nice T - a 1972 car that has been rebuilt as an RS "evocation" I think they call it now..... It has a low mileage 3.2 and should be a hoot
However......notwithstanding that it's done to a very high standard, it was done 15 years ago (suppose at a time where originality wasn't too serious) and the "oilklappe" exclusive to the '72 has been deleted.....I guess to make it look more like an RS.
So I've been thinking I'd like to take it back. I know nothing about bodywork but would guess that:
1. It makes most sense to carefully cut out and replace the entire area with "oilklappe" section? In theory the wing may not need to be replaced if the following is true?
2. As most wings seem to rust at the bottom, it's not inconceivable that there would be serviceable "oilklappe" sections out there?
Has anybody done this before or have any thoughts?
Regards

Thanks Nick
I'm going to first try my luck for the complete assembly, even if it's a long shot - there are hinges, the actual flap, screws/bolts, springs and all sorts that I'd rather not buy separately/new.
Cheers

Hi Magnus
Sorry I can't help you with a filler flap because although I have one I kind of need it. But seeing as you don't mention it in your post I wondered if you had overlooked the fact that there's quite a bit more too it than just a filler. Oil tank, filter console and pipe work will all be needed as well. I don't know if there are any major differences between the 3.2 and the 2.4's but part compatibility might be worth checking too.

Re: 1972 car - Restoring the "Oilklappe" parts
Oil tank is unique to the 1972. You will also need a strap to hold the tank in place which is the same as that fitted to other early 911's. The oil console requires 30mm 1.5 fittings. If you are running a front cooler you will need the 1972 "S" oil console which can be difficult to find and also under sill solid oil lines which are available new. Used oil flap doors are available but the push rod catch is more difficult to find. You may find buying the parts separately is the only option unless you are lucky enough to find someone breaking a 72.

Re: 1972 car - Restoring the "Oilklappe" parts
Thank you gents
Yes - I had thought it would more complicated, with the "inner" gubbins too. This drive is a function of my planning side combined with my "imagination" side........I don't yet have the car . On receipt of the car I'll check what we have as the "inner gubbins" and have a little more clarity then....
Personally I think the side oil filler is a great feature and important to reinstate, so let's call this a long term information gathering and parts assembly initiative
Thanks again

Re: 1972 car - Restoring the "Oilklappe" parts
Thank you Chris and "Billy Bean"
Let me "bag" the car (which will take a few weeks) and then determine what is fitted - I'll then be in touch.

Take special care of studying the inside of the fender. Due to water leakage through the backwindow they tend to rust on part where the filter is mounted. This part you cannot buy. We made it ourselves, but it was a nasty job.
