Ill let you know when it's running. Been informed it all depends on how much lash is present between the Cam gears which determine how much it whines.Gary71 wrote:Nice compact unit, I've not seen inside one before. Are the straight cut cam gears loud when driving?

Looking very impressive so far, including the old engine.

Do you know what sized cam gear was fitted originally?

Bruce are we taking about the old engine or the core engine(new engine).
If your talking about the core engine l can have a look has I've still got everything. Do they have markings on them? Never really looked but curious now. I'll dig them out.

A few more pics
Has it stands at the moment. Awaiting a few parts before its fired up. It's getting exciting now it's about to come alive.

The new engine core. The original cams came with a range of gear sizes to set the backlash. Was -8 to +8 I think. The aftermarket gears are about a -2 (never verified this however) so they will fit most engines. If the original cam gear is in the ballpark it suggests the backlash will be close. However, if it's had a line bore then that probably nullifies all that anyway.mdmax72 wrote:Bruce are we taking about the old engine or the core engine(new engine).

Edit: looks like the stock gears are -3 to +3, which makes more sense.

Re: 914 engine core, strip and rebuild
Had a look at the gears this morning Bruce. The gear on the camshaft has -3 on it.
A line bore wasn't need when the case went for machining, so was left stock.

Hopefully that means the gears will have a tight backlash which should minimise the noise (within the limits of what you can achieve with straight cut gears).

I've had a Torque bar gathering dust for some time. So whilst the engine's out I'm going to modify it to fit. It's going to be a tight fit but a worthwhile upgrade.

It's alive and kicking. Here's a video, you may need to click on the picture for it to play??
Next job is to finish of the torque bar and get the engine back in the car l think. Then sort out the dry sump tank and hoses etc. Should be fun as l'm still getting my head around all this dry sump stuff.

Oooh, nice & smooth. Could have sworn the idle was too high as it ticks over so evenly but the rev counter said otherwise. Nice pick up too, without any hesitation.

Re: 914 engine core, strip and rebuild
They were my thoughts also Bruce, ticking over to high. It ticks over at 800 rpm really smooth, compared to my 1911 motor which ticked over nice but was lumpy. Also only a very slight whine from the straight cut gears, can't even hear it in the video. First thing l did notice was the exhaust sound has changed even just on tick-over.

Cheers Olly
A little progress. Brace bar mounting tabs welded up and fitted.
A few bits back from powder coaters.
Took the opportunity to fit heavy duty engine/gearbox mounts, brace bar now in situ.
