Re: Wanted complete 915 gearbox rebuild kit
I don't think there is a kit as such, I ve had 3 rebuilt and it seems you just change everything that moves, slides or clicks!
Suggest a call to Mike Bainbridge Engineering in the Lake District, he has done literally hundreds of them, and has links to the parts which I think are mainly from Porsche.
About £2000 for a full kit....

No mention of bearings in original post, some of which are unique to Porsche & priced accordingly.
Single-piece bearing retainer plate is also a worthwhile upgrade while you are in there.

Apart from the unique ones you can obtain the majority of the bearings from your local friendly stockist. Proper brand (skf etc) and about 10% of the price.

Re: Wanted complete 915 gearbox rebuild kit
Hi Guys,
Thank you for the info, its a 1986 32 Carrera sport Vin: WP0ZZZ91ZGS101631 Engine no:101631 Reg: C999TLF.
Symptoms : notchy in 2nd to 3rd up and down, and many times in 5th it would seize and need a strong hand and double clutching to get it to release. Old Massey Ferguson 135 tractor box would describe it best, even with Swepco.
Do these symptoms I describe, tell what needs to be replaced ?

Re: Wanted complete 915 gearbox rebuild kit
HI Denis
subject to the milage on the box, it may need, (if it is not in bits now);
box Type No 915/72 gearbox No 73G XXXXX
1X gasket set
1X pinon nut
1X input-shaft nut
1X 1st gear syncro band
1X 1st/2nd slider
1X 2nd dog teeth
1X 2nd gear syncro band
3X 3rd/4th/5th gear syncro bands
1X 3rd dog teeth
1X 3rd/4th slider
1X pinion flanged bearing
1X input-shaft flanged bearing
it may need some more bearings/dog teeth when inspected, depending on the damage to the dog teeth and the wear on the syncro bands, this could be the cause of the 5th gear being tight to come out of gear.
poss' also needed;
1X large pinion roller bearing
1X O/S pinion roller bearing outer, if the diff case is worn
1X gear lever bush
1X gear shaft bush
poss' also '
1X gear shaft , if the end is starting to brake out
check the shaft to gearbox joint bushes have not colapsed, or started to.
the gear lever needs setting up if the 5th to come out correctly and the box checking when stipped
the engine No should start *63G XXXXX * and not just be 101631 type No' 930/20

Re: Wanted complete 915 gearbox rebuild kit
Jasper, now you know why people go to Mike for gearboxes...
Mike, hope you are well and working on the Terrapin, Lola going well, first in class this year.
When Mike did my 3.2 (1985, about 100K miles, 40K done on road and hill climbing) box we found the main bearings just dropped out of the cases, the bores for these large diameter bearings were worn oval rendering the cases almost scrap.
The difficulties with that box were sticky/awkward sometimes crunchy 2nd gear, rest were fine.
At that time (4 years ago) I sent the bare cases from Mike's place to a specialist Porsche place down south who screwed-up the case machining (re-machine the bores over size but correct centres and steel sleeve to suit the brgs). They screwed that up and told me to f off.
Mike re-machined the bearing to suit the undersized sleeve and the box is great. Lots of parts required.
Ask mike to supply a one piece 'teddy-bear' bearing support frame as already said.(from California, 3 days from order placed to Mike's garage)
You will be in safe hands in the Lake District Jasper.

Re: Wanted complete 915 gearbox rebuild kit
Hi Guys,
All your input is really very much appreciated, and I will apply to herself for " new heating boiler" .
My 86 32 Carrera coupe has 144k miles, and its my summer daily touring machine, to make it a bit more useable , I fitted full leather electric tombstone seats, I polished the bolsters with Scuff go & old fashioned shoe polish applying it regularly and buffing same it turned out great.
I fitted a Porsche shortshift kit, CS steering wheel, turbo tie rods, polybushed the gear linkages, fitted a SS sports dansk 84MM dual outlet exhaust, K&N, 7 x 9 x16 fuch's on Conti rubber. What did not work for me was a " performance chip " I think one needs a hot film remap. IMHO the 32 Carrera is midway in the aircooled gene pool classical and beautiful I really like the IB look and how it was a great design and works so well, compared to other US spec euro cars from other makers.
I would post a photo but have lost all my photos on photobucket.
PS : I had a great drive in my 70 2.2E going to cars & coffee, these are high revving lightweight supercars. The feel and rawness is so special ....
Thank you again.
