Info on a 50's Porsche 'import' registration No plate pls?

Info on a 50's Porsche 'import' registration No plate pls?
I was chatting to a fella today who showed me this (see below). He says it's a temporary registration plate as issued in Germany in the late 50's for people who were then required to travel over there to pick up their new cars personally (pre UK Porsche dealer days?). The numbers refer to the year in some way (maybe a 59 in this case?)
Apparently, they were attached to the car front and back and the front plate, along with the German paperwork, was then submitted to the UK authorities in order to register the car over here? Hauptzollamt does seem to translate from German to to Central Customs Office.
Fact or fiction, am I too gulible? Anyone know anything about the process and if this is for real?

As the German plates stay with their owners and insurance is logged to the plate , even today you need to apply for transit or export plates when moving a car from Germany ... So in theory he could be correct

That looks like a tourist export zoll Z plate which were used for temporary use round Europe for customers who collected their new car at the factory before export to the destination country.
The first three numbers are the location code of the issuing office, 528 maybe Stuggart?

Just checked, 528 is Stuggart east issuing office from 1965 to mid 1967. Z for zollplate.

You are of course right Mike.
I have seen a photo of a '62 356 with the Zoll plate starting 328 which I assuming is also Stuttgart.

I can concur. My granddad bought his Porsches directly from Germany (1. He was German. 2. The Belgian Porsche dealers "are all crooks" that don't know a screwdriver from a spanner. ) and he drove them over on these temp plates. To add insult to injury, they could be issued for 1 month, to 3 months to up to a year IIRC, and he would push them boundaries "just so" to annoy the local police.
