Hello from another lurker!

Post by Hannibales »

Hello there!

I've been lurking for a while and even joined sixth months ago but have only now got round to introducing myself.

In the summer I bought a '66 912 and have been driving it as much as possible, so far I've put on 2.5k miles and a smile that keeps getting bigger!! In the previous 10 years she'd only averaged 100 miles a year so she's now getting a thorough workout! So far I've changed the oil in the engine and transmission and done the brake fluid and pads. I also got to change the light switch after the original decided to incinerate itself, luckily no damage beyond an acrid smell in the nostrils! Traced it to the instrument lights, which of course were unfused, so that is being sorted at the moment.

Now the weather has closed in I've also started refurbishing bits and pieces, the under bumper fog lamps, the pedal cluster bushes, and to come is a full suspension rebuild and recondition as most of the bushes are shot, though that'll wait for it to warm up as I'm working outside at the minute. Also I'm tracing her history, so far I've found that she was owned by a Frazer Nash enthusiast who took her on some of their 'Raids' to Bolzano and the Nurburgring (with pictures!!!), and he was also the chap who paid AFN to put in the '69 911E engine!

I'll upload some pics for your enjoyment once I get them hosted.

Anyway, that's enough from me, look forward to answering any questions you have about her and hopefully asking a few of my own!

Cheers,

Oli

OK, here we go! (hopefully!)

How she was in 1971 in Mayen, a town just east of the Nurburgring...

How she is today, well not today because it's cold and wet and dark....but you know what I mean....

And a few from when I picked her up....

Awesome! - welcome to the forum. NOthing like doing the little jobs to bond with the car - glad you're enjoying it!

When was the 911 engine put in? (Sounds from your story like it may have been a while ago) - also do you know if the brakes were updated to handle the additional power?
The simple things you see are all complicated
I look pretty young but I'm just backdated yeah

Thanks for the kind words. It really is the first few little things that help you bond, and get ready for when you have to do any big jobs!

I can tell you exactly when it was changed...... 1st October 1976.....

Image

For a cost of £3156.23! Edit.....using an online inflation tool this is equivalent to £23,676.02 today

Image

And that was for quite a lot of works and parts!

Image

As for the brakes.....I haven't seen anything about them....for the life of me can't remember if I saw part numbers on the callipers...I'll have a look when it's warmer!

Welcome to DDK, lovely car with a great history. The photo from 1971 is excellent.

I'm sure if you costed that list today it would easily exceed you inflation based figure!

I have an ebay printout when it was sold on there about 10 years ago and a traders bill of sale for the same deal, which has Mark Sumpter's name on it so I may have to call Paragon at some point too!
