Replacing rubber seals and wind noise

Evening all,

I'm due to get my 69 back from Max @ Revival next week who has been working through a list of bits and bobs for me and I'm thinking what's next to sort out !!

As I won't be driving the car much over the winter I'm going to get the head lining replaced. As the glass will need to be taken out I thought it made sense to replace the screen and door rubbers at the same time.

So my questions are:

1: Do I buy Porsche or after market seals ? Is there any difference apart from the price !!

2: The wind noise from the doors is pretty loud over 40mph, I understand that this is common on these cars so it would be good to hear what people have tried to help reduce this.

Any advice or comments would be cool.

Hi Tim,

The answer to No. 1 is yes - defo use original Porsche seals. Aftermarket aren't worth the headache, as I recently discovered.

WRT No. 2, there is some sort of proper fix for this, but a cheap one is to fit adhesive-backed P-seal down the inside edge of the A-pillar.

+1 for genuine seals, after market are a waste of time and money.

I would say, don't build your hopes up. I had terrible wind in my 911 and tried all sorts of things but in the end found that leaving the quarterlights slightly ajar worked best. Not ideal in freezing cold weather though.

Just forked out £1500 for all new rubber seals from Porsche for my 1979 911. But that is just about everything on the car. The most surprising thing is that it was a bit more but not a lot more than non-Porsche rubber when it all came together. But the even more surprising thing ? Porsche direct were £1000 cheaper than anyone else for pukka Porsche parts !!!

And I'm with mycar, honestly the seals won't make a massive difference to wind noise, the best thing about the old 911's and our lovely 912's is the quarter windows. They make the single biggest difference to wind noise. Crack them open and save the money !

I was afraid that someone might confirm what i suspected, that new seals won't improve the wind noise much anyway.

Unfortunately the 69 don't have 1/4 windows so I a bit of trial & error with some p-seals or maybe molding putty inside the seal to fattened them up might be worth a shot.

Have been reading in and just want to say thanks for the info, especially when it comes to getting them direct from Porsche.

Mine need renewing as the originals have gone hard and dry and due to crumpling no longer seal at all in some places, not a cheap job, but best done!

Do you have vent windows in your 912? The seals are going on mine and that is now the main cause of wind noise.

you dont' have to have wind noise from the front a pillars.. my 964 for example doesn't so it shows it is possible to sort it.

My 1973 car admittedly does, but not of what I would class as any significance. If I really wanted to I could

Richard Murphys Targa had loads of wind noise , too much in fact , but I know he's now sorted that too

Point being , all the above posts make you htink you have to live with it , you don't. A combination of the correct seals in the right place etc etc + maybe the use / copying the position of 964 / 993 cars and you can reduce it
