I'll back that one up, intermittent starter, if it ain't a bad earth try the brushes. I had the same problem with a Beetle of mine years ago, only a few pounds for new brushes, abit awkward getting the starter off and messing with different connections, but its relatively easy.
You could even remove the starter yourself and take it to a local auto sparky and ask them to check it over. Having said that, they'll more than likely want to refurn the whole unit.

Helen, did this get fully resolved?
After the Yorkshire trip my 12 decided not to start on the driveway. No click nothing, lights on the dashboard go on but nothing else. I was thinking the immobaliser was stopping this but am not sure how to disable it to test.
Thinking back it had done a couple of odd things starting wise over the weekend but after a couple of key turns worked.
Any other ideas?

nothings been solved we have just learnt how to deal with it.
every now and again the starter motor seems to stop at a dead spot and as you discribe nothing happens when you turn the key...the ignititon light turn on but theres no click...nothing.
to solve...
a)push start, once its started the problem seems to go away again for a while.
b) Lazza gets under the car and connects a wire to turn the starter motor over. we now carry this spare bit of wire around in the tool kit.
c) phone recovery tow truck and try and sell the car

The 6V Herbie Beetle I had was exactly the same. Had the motor rebuilt but sometimes - nothing.
Bump it and usually fine again for a while - its there little way of reminding us who's in charge.
