Which wiring and from where?

Post by ryanha »

Hi everyone, I'm looking to rewire my engine bay and add a 'quick release' block to allow easy engine removal... my question is whiich wiring do people recommend and from what supplier?

My wiring doesn't really need to be 100% matching to the original just nice and tidy.

Also if anyone has added a quick release plug which did you go for?

As always any help is appreciated.
Ryan

I can't see the point. I have removed dozens of engines and never felt that the standard loom was lacking or difficult to disconnect. How many times do you need to remove your engine anyway?

I take your point but my engine wiring is a bit of a mess and I don't really want to do the whole car, this way I can re wire just the engine and not everything...

that was my thinking.

If you go on ebay and search waterproof connector in vehicle accessories you can find suitable connectors in 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 + way blocks, I've used the same in some the wiring I've done.

Ryan, what car are you talking about, you posted in the 911 section, but your signature says you have a 912. The 911 already has a 14 pin plug :?

Hi Nick it's my 912 which has a 2.0 e engine from 1969 which was added at some point... It doesn't have the 'proper' wiring so I was looking to improve what is there.

If I did want correct coloured wiring is there a supplier where I could buy this without buying a complete harness from say Kroon?

vehicle wiring products (just google), or buy a harness from Kroon like you say. I wouldnt worry too much about the colours (but i would check the gauge), as most of it is under black wrap/sheathing. Kroon uses the modern thin wall wiring, its rated for a higher temperature, although some say more brittle, i haven't got enough experience to comment. VWP have two colour wiring in thin wall or thick wall.

If you wrap the wiring, ive never done a whole section of a loom, but im told you need to use harness tape, not just black PVC tape, as its rated for a higher temperature (looks the same). Add some heatshrink where necessary and you will make a nice loom.

For the connector i cant help you, i take it you dont have the 911 multi point connector which attaches to the relay board on the left hand side of the engine bay.

HI thanks for the info. I did come across these guys when I looked in Google but wasn't sure what 'size' wiring I needed. And no I don't have the connector but I suppose I could try and source one. Do you have a picture of what they look like?

Regularly use vehicle wiring products excellent service. The genuine 14 pin plug and pins is still available as spare part and easy to install.

The correct way to size the wiring (if your copying the wire) is to strip the insulation off and measure the diameter of the copper, and/or count the stands, well I think thats right - some one else chime in? I think the size may also be on the wiring diagrams? ive seen it on some - it always refers to the copper, not the entire wire. Im sure someone who knows more can elaborate

Ok so just to update you guys out of interest...

Outer diameter of wire sheath is 2.5mm
30 strands
Outer diameter of just copper strands is 1.4mm

So now I'll try and match this on http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/s ... -pvc-cable
