Suggestion: Members mechanical help ring

Reading about poor Gary's fuel pump going on sunday, it occured to me that a members 'help' ring might be an idea for people to consider?

The idea being that anyone who has any tools / technical knowledge / spares etc. volunteers to be the persion in their region - one in each region around the country (hell, why not even Europe?) - and puts their numbers together - perhaps on a sticky on the forum?

If a DDK member has a problem while travelling away from home, they could look up the nearest 'ring' member and ask for assistance.

There'd be no guarantees or charges - simply an honour to replace any components that were needed / used.

For example, I actually *had* a suitable fuel pump in my garage - which would have got Gary going, and I was only 15 miles from him - but he didn't know; if the 'ring' system were in place, he could have called me and I'd have done whatever I could to get him going.

I've been a member of the Triumph Sports Six Club for many years, and they operate a similar concept.

The idea is to *never* rely on it as a substitute from an RAC / AA / Green Flag card - but to assist when they are unable to help.

It'd also be a good reason for forum members to become full DDK members?

What does anyone think?

I think it's a great idea Phil - I have lots of tools, but not many spare parts however I would be happy to assist for the 'greater good' of DDK members.

Like Ian, I have many tools but not many spares. This being my downfall on Sunday! I carry enough tools to rebuild the engine, but when the fuel pump decides to die I break down (and)

I think we have the members phone number section, maybe a helpful moderator could collate this list into one post and we could identify our desire (or otherwise!) to be part of the help ring.

Good idea, count me in.Maybe we should areas we,re usually in.
West and Southwest London for and Essex quite alot.
Couple of bits, tools and some trusty mechanics if we couldn,t fix problem.

P.S. The Moto Guzzi club have run their scheme so successfully, they actually issue an annual 'Rescue Register'. Being a pretty big club, you are seldom far away from help.

Although I'm much more likely to be a taker than a giver to this initiative. Pleased to help in any way I can though

pmjt - my guess is that this needs to be managed well to make it work. Maybe site admin may have a few ideas about that

I am already the first to benefit from this (i.e. your exhaust)?

I'd say count me in, but apart from moral support I would have little else to offer, but who knows, I always tend to keep a set of points, plugs and filters to hand and perhaps my spare dodgey distributor may see someone home?

Actually - when things *do* go wrong - a pot of tea is often a wonderful solution

Seriously - help doesn't have to be in the form of mechanical - it might be as daft as giving a lift to the train station while the car goes home on the transporter, or knowing where to get a tyre fixed when there's a nail in it! Or where to stay that won't rip you off - and where to find a specialist the next morning. Local knowledge - and a comforting voice - is often worth more than all the AA / RAC men put together.

So, if we're keen then I'll create a sticky (gulp, first one I've done!) with my details and if anyone wants to add to them - great

Let's see if the idea works!

yes and me the 912's have a similar thing for 912's in the US I suggested it for 912's here in the UK but the number was too small so this is a great Idea for all models I can help with temp storage/tools/info if you break down on the M27 Southampton / Portsmouth/ Winchester M3 area my mate has a tow lorry ( beer money to him ) as well
