Re: Engine startup advice needed
The whine from the relay board will be the CDI Ignition box, this is quite normal. Worry when it goes silent ! If the starter won't run, check for aftermarket security devices, immobilisers etc.. It may also immobilise the fuel pump too.
Check all the bulkhead connectors under the dash, these can benefit from a wiggle to clean the contacts, as too can the multi connector in the engine bay. Good luck

Re: Engine startup advice needed
It's worth checking under the car by the starter to see if an aftermarket relay have been fitted to protection the ignition switch from the volts going through the starter. My 356 has one of these with a secret fuse in there.AndrewSlater wrote:Does anyone know if I am missing something, i.e. a fuse, a relay or hidden switch somewhere.
Might be worth passing a wire directly from the battery positive to the starter to see if you can help the solenoid clicking?
Freshing/checking all the normal fuses just incase one of them has gone?

Hi Andrew follow Tim impmads advise! you may have to lift the car on to stands or wheel ramps so you are able to slide under the car you can check voltage at the big feed wire termanal on the starter also if you get someone to turn the key while you lay under the car (remember ehth n safty) with a hammer and drift, hit the starter a few times you can hit it quite hard without damage! if that is with result tap the sollaniod but not to hard as they can be broken. If you still have no luck come back for more advise.

Re: Engine startup advice needed
All good advice, much appreciated.
I did find a non standard toggle switch on the dash that I hoped was some form of immobiliser but no luck.
I will do some more basic electrical checks at my next opportunity.
Can anyone recommend what the best schematic is for a '74?
I was hoping it would be in my user manual but unlike my '66 one there is no schematic.
However I did find out that my last service was recorded in 1985 though, so I think the car has been off the road for the best part of 30 years.
I've seen the old style 73 schematics and the newer style ( yuk!!) '78 SC schematics online but is there anything in between? Is the 73 schematic with CIS identical for a '74?
Thanks
Andrew

Re: Engine startup advice needed
I've now established that the fuel pump feed has 12v on it with ignition so expect it to be the pump.
I decided to remove my relay board to give all the electrical connnections a clean.
However on reassembly I found a connection that I hadn't made a note of and there are two possibilities to reconnecting it.
I have a red black / red white cable through a two way connector from the vehicle loom, and two mating connectors on the relay board.
Which one is which.
I've 'borrowed' a photo from a different thread.
The two connectors in question are the identical ones ( black two pin ) in the lower left of the photo ( shown disconnected ).
Can anyone identify them?

Hi the longer one goes to the heated rear window plug the short one I am not sure but is often not connected and tucked under the panel, I have a set of the porsche reparaturleitfaden with wiring diagrams up to 73, if would you like a copy I can print one off and post to you. Berny.

Re: Engine startup advice needed
Thanks again Berny.
Do you know where the second way goes out of interest?
If the first way is the heated screen is the second way the warm up regulator?
Also interested to know what the other connector is for.
I have found a few different wiring diagrams now but they don't seem to show these connectors clearly ( or are consistent as to the white on red and black on red wiring ) - I don't think the CIS supplement diagram is helping.
The standard schematic shows only one of the three rear fuses used for a manual car, but on the CIS diagram shows all three fitted, but doesn't explain their function. My car has all three rear fuses fitted [ I just wish I knew what they were for
]
I'm guessing one of the leads was tucked away when I disconnected everything otherwise I would have made better notes.
I'm sure I will solve it - eventually.
Thanks Andrew

Re: Engine startup advice needed
Update from this weekend.
Found the fuel pump and managed to remove it by jacking the car up and removing the rear wheel.

It is a Bosch 0580364002 (not sure if that is the original pump but looks pretty old)
The pump didn't run on a power supply so started to strip it down.
I found that when I had disassembled it enough to get to the shaft if I turned the motor continuity would come and go - suggesting the commutator was dirty. If I ran the motor and turned the spindle it would run up - but didn't seem a strong runner.
Stripped the motor down fully and cleaned the commutator as well as plenty of other parts and cleaned all the years of rubbish out.
Painted the motor housing to tidy it up a bit.

Lucky it was a Bosch pump [ don't have a Pierburg sign
]
Trial fitted back together and it seems to whizz along nicely now.
Anyone got any tips on reconditioning before I put it back together for good.
Next job - starter.

Re: Engine startup advice needed
well done lub bearings and reassemble, check for leaks. If you can't get the starter to work after taping and checking for voltage or the other way round get someone to turn the key to start an check for voltage on small wire to solernoid, if you have a good feed then starter at fault. remove and clean as pump. good luck you are making progress.

Re: Engine startup advice needed
What should I lubricate the bearings with?
I was assuming the motor was self lubricating from the fuel supply.
I think the commutator acts as one bearing and the other is at the bottom with the shaft running into the case hole with three washers.
I could pack the bottom case bearing hole I guess as it is a blind hole.

Re: Engine startup advice needed
I would just use something like wheel bearing grease should be ok!
