What do you know about gearboxes?

Post by jonat127 »

So, the question is have I bu@@ered my box?
Did a bit of a major crunch trying to select third at mclaren bend at brands hatch, think I might have caught 1st
Now it crunches when going into 1st and is really stiff to get out of 1st. Also, it feels like it is only going half way in when selecting 1st.
What do peeps think?
I haven't checked adjustment yet but all other gears select fine.

It's hopefully just knocked out of adjustment. Google the procedure for adjustment, it's easier than they would let you believe.

the selector ring

and the dog teeth

are usually worn badly on first gear, and you may have damaged them during the inadvertent gearshift.

Check and double-check the adjustment of the gear lever, linkage and all of the bushes, joints and securing screws before you start into the gearbox itself!

I lost 1st over the summer after a few track days (no crunches though) and took the whole linkage assembly out and replaced all the bushings and bulkhead seal etc. It was quite straight forward. Got all the bits from Roger Bray.
Once all new bits in and adjusted it's like a new gearbox!!
Wish I had done it years ago!!
Good luck.

Just one more event and the tax runs out so I'm going to start repairs in October.
Did all the linkage bushes etc about four years ago and shifting was v good till I crunched it.
From what I have read above the worst case scenario is the selector ring and dog teeth which don't look too difficult so I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Will keep you posted.
Thanks for all your comments and encouragement.
