Great stuff Mark. I'm really enjoying your thread - for geeks like us, it's much more interesting seeing the oily & rusty bits being fixed than polishing shiny paint.

1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Post by sladey »

With the the reminder on another thread yesterday that it's only 8 weeks to CLM it was time to bring out the big guns.

The cavalry duly arrived yesterday in the form of Neil. I met Neil a couple of months ago through DDK and Impact Bumpers - he lives really close. Neil has worked in body shops for years and is currently restoring a 964 for someone as well as a Beetle. He really knows his stuff on all bodywork matters and is a nice guy to boot. He's very kindly agreed to do the drivers side sills for me and he started yesterday

First bracing the doorway - more substantial than mine was on the other side

Then cutting the outer sill off

And then exploring some damage to the floor at the rear

It's not too clear on the photo but there is a big indentation where someone has jacked it up on the floor. This was filled in with loads of gobbo so wasn't visible previously. Other than that though the floor on this side is 10 times better than the other side - it's really only the rear bit that has gone so Neil should be able to fabricate something up for that rather than me buying a half floor repair panel.

Bringing Neil on board makes a big difference as it allows me to focus on the drivers front wing, the RHS wheels arches, the engine cover, both bumpers and fitting the bonnet and preparing it for the respray.

Mark, have you been bulk buying 'brave pills'?
This is some seriously impressive work you're undertaking here.
Hats off to you.
Will it be ready for Classic Le Mans 2016?
