Ask all the questions you want to the guys at:
porsche964@yahoogroups.co.uk
A great store of knowledge there, starting with stock lists of points to look for in a used car.
I'm away from my base and not using my own computer at the moment, so can't immediately provide a lot of advice. But I have owned a 1991 C2 for five years and could not have done it in a remote location like northern Japan without the yahoogroups support.
Mine is a tiptro. Not originally by choice, but I specifically wanted a RHD car, and the only ones imported into Japan in RHD were all tiptros. And much as I love my manual 911S, I have now become a real fan of the tiptro as well. Don't write a good car off because it is tiptro. In fact, I believe the tiptro has a better record regarding reliability and maintenance costs than the manual. You have to get used to missing the h&t down changes - as someone observed above - but you develop your own driving style and enjoy it just as much as the manual in due course.
In fact, I was originally looking for an earlier car, and didn't ever really consider the 964, but when an opportunity to drive one came up I was taken by surprise. A very good model.
But do ask the yahoo group.
Cheers
Greg

Mmm, pretty much bang on there Sean...
Bit of a schlep for me but you never know.
Mean time, thank you Sam, Jason, Greg, Hamish, smallspeed and all. Looked at a car at the weekend, and all your comments were really helpful. Much appreciated.
Don't hold your breath, but I'll update
James

298bhp isn't possible from a remap and exhaust, 270 is about it. For 298 you need lots of bits - cams, induction work, another 200cc...
