This matching number UK right-hand-drive 2.4 S is simply glorious.
It has been painstakingly and completely professionally restored in the hands of the most recent owner who acquired it as a 'barn find' in 1994 and is in exemplary mechanical and cosmetic order throughout.
The car was manufactured in late 1972 (so road tax exempt) as a 1973 model and was supplied on January 2nd 1973 to Lt Col Potter of Cambridge by Ian Anthony Ltd. It completed 100,000 miles in the next 14 years and at some stage changed from its original sepia brown metallic to red before the road tax expired in 1987 and the car was stripped and laid up ready for restoration. Thankfully all of the original parts were kept together.
As is often the case, the restoration never began and in November 1994 it changed hands, passing to the man who would finally bring the car back to life and from whom we acquired it.
Now work began immediately and a detailed photographic and written record was kept throughout and since.
The shell was bare metalled and carefully repaired as necessary. With the original colour then being less than desirable, an alternative was chosen, the owner opting for probably our favourite 1973 correct shade of Gemini blue metallic.
The interior, complete with Recaro sports seats and 380mm sports wheel, was retrimmed in black leather with courduroy and black carpets. The dash was reconditioned, the dials refurbished and the headlining replaced. It is one of the smartest, most attractive early interiors we have come across.
Everything mechanical was rebuilt and detailed accordingly, the engine being finally completed and fitted ready for the road in January 1997 at 100,831 miles.
The car then covered a further 10,000 miles up to June 2004, but the owner was never happy with the performance of the engine and gearbox and so commissioned specialist JZ Machtech to undertake another full rebuild. The results were typically excellent, the engine making 188bhp on the dyno. Now, another 26,000 miles on, it feels just as strong.
The car has clearly been utterly cherished since the restoration and remains in remarkable order throughout. One look at the history file confirms the fastidious care with which everything has been undertaken.
Today it drives impeccably, steering and handling precisely, aided by wider 7" rear wheels, accelerating briskly and smoothly and stopping brilliantly. One would imagine that it drives at least as well as it did in 1973.
It is sold with a photographic restoration record, a thick folder of receipts from all of the right names, documents from Porsche GB confirming the car's matching numbers, a complete ownership history and the original burgundy-walleted maintenance record and handbooks.
There can be very few 2.4 S models in such fine order as this. We have certainly not sold one.
