arches profile

Post by jtparr »

hi

does anyone know if a comparison has been made of the various arches over the years....I'd like to see a cross section/profile through the shape of the fronts and rears for the standard 69-73 cars, the RS, RSR, ST, the early turbo's and the Carrera 3.2 super sports

any thoughts ?

thanks

we had a discussion over the ST arches in a German forum:
- Serienbreite hinten 1,61 m
1,61m is the standard pre 74 width
1,652 is the RS - near the size as a SC/Carrera but slightly different formed
1,71 is the ST - but it appears that there are a lot of variations these years
1,796 RSR - near the size as a Turbo but slightly different formed

I was impressed when Mike (210bhp) was commenting on the SC arches on an RS at CLM (IIRC). I can't tell the difference. This thread needs some pics!

ok, as you asked.......

and forgive me if I get the odd one wrong....

pre 69 cars

Image

ST
various, so here's just two

Image

Image

69-73 cars

Image

RSR
(don't know if all of these are true or true copies as turbo arches sometimes used for replicas, aplogies to the owners if they are all real... )

Image

Image

Image

72/73 RS cars
rear arch flat face tapers from c.25mm at top to c.10mm at ends

Image

Image

Image

74/75 2.7 Carrera and 3.0 Carrera
arch bulge same as RS but flat face does not vary as much with c.20mm at top and c.15mm at ends (later SC and 3.2 cars were slightly different again I beleive, with constant width of flat face)

Image

3.0 RSR

Image

3.2 supersport/later turbos

so if there's anyway of finding out the true profiles and drawings, I'd be interested to generate a CAD comparison section and also modelling them in 3D for a project

Just a few comments on the pictures posted by Jonathan :

The first car shown was my 911R-inspired car which was built from a '72 model.

The second (Pastel Blue) 'ST' is in fact a '68 T/R which had (RS?) rear flares added in (I think) the early/mid '70's

The first 2.8 RSR (B&W photo) has Turbo rear flares

& something doesn't look quite right with the flares on the silver/green 3.0 RSR

hi stretch

yup saw that too, almost OK in an ugly kind of way, I went over to the Porsche place hoping they might have one of the new classic sports on view, but no luck, liked the orange/black and black/orange pair of GT3's though

strech

good choice, that was a work of art

mind you so was this monster in the Mercedes museum, can't recal the name but designed by Porsche just before the war, recall it was meant to run up to somwthing like 300mph.....looked like it might take off and fly
