"S" Identification issue

Post by sopotRS »

I have an opportunity to buy an early S for a moderate price.
The chassis number and engine are both from 1970. The problem is that the chassis number is not in its usual place ie. right edge of the steel panel close to the tank but on the opposite side (looks like not from the factory). I've hoped that the serial number which on the knee bar would help but it is 101874, which tells as far as I concern that this is coupe and from 1971.
It has external trombone oil cooler in the right front fender with thermostat mounted just next to the oil filler neck in the engine bay.

Are there any other ways to confirm the type of the car ?!

Thanks for help.

The production number is for a 1971 Coupe ...

The Factory never stamped the VIN to the LHS (when viewed from the rear) of the petrol tank.

Sounds like it's a fake - what are the VIN & engine number ?

Are you talking about the riveted plate on the slam panel, or the vin at the rear-side of the tank.?

I'm not talking of VIN plate, which is ok but about VIN number stamped on the metal.
When one is sitting behind the steering wheel it is stamped on the left side on of the steel panel instaed of right near the tank.

I've thought there is other way to identify the model apart of VIN and engine , which are correct for 1970.

Oil lines through the sill, front, under the wing oil cooler, S tacho,7200 redline. oil console in engine bay. aluminium S calipers. Thats all i can think off. As previously discussed on here, the build number, but i dont think it matches the vin on the later cars.

Andy might no more

Hi,

All the LWB production #s I have seen have 7 digits. Are you missing one of the digits in the sequence?

OK, I'm confused (easily done I hear you say, I blame the MOD and drugs personally  ) Can anyone post up a picture of all the places there Vin, chassis and engine numbers etc are stamped, stuck and or otherwise applied. For example, what is the number next to the windscreen on the left hand side? and the number on the door section when the (on my car it's LHD) LH door is open? Is that the paint number? did it make any difference to Porsche if the the car was LHD or RHD in terms of where they put the numbers etc? and yes, I'm ignorant in such things but remarkably not in soo many other areas

I thank you

The small ally plate on the left windscreen pillar and the silver sticker on the left B post are USA only. The VIN stamping on 1964 - 1983ish cars is always on the boot floor behind the fuel tank, on the right side of the car. The ally VIN plate is on the right side of the front slam panel from 65 - 73. then on the inner wing

The build number is on the dash by the ashtray on all cars to 1973. Very early cars (-66) also had the 6 digit VIN stamped on the doors, engine lid, bonnet and in the headlamp bowls. They also had the VIN stamped on the paint code tag on the left A pillar.

And the number was also in crayon on the dash top underneath the vinyl in pre 74 (?) cars on the left hand side.

There you go Mike. Plain as day. More numbers than you know what to do with and more places to hide them than you ever thought possible. Not confused now ehhh?
