Ok, have to admit from the start that I am not very well versed on the value of watches - but I'm getting close to knowing what I like. I currently have a small and modest stable - Longines, Omega Seamaster (automatic) and TAG Carrera (again, automatic). I have a real leaning towards TAG - the whole 'motorsport thang baby', and I love the style. I have seen a really lovely TAG or sale - a 1974 Silversone, and from someone I believe is a well regarded specialist. Could anyone advise what they think is about the right price for such a watch please? I want to stress here that I am that I am not doubting his prices - I would just like an objective/ second opinion.

I love the look of the watch, but it's a reasonable sum of money so I would like to know it's a reasonable investment for the long term as well as being something I would be chuffed to be wearing

A good Silverstone would fetch anywhere from £2500 to £3500. Colour doesn't make too much difference although if it's red I'll be very jealous! Original bracelet adds value although I prefer them on a colour match rally.

Thanks for the replies and info too! My knowledge of watches is not as good as my knowledge of classic cars, so forgive the next questions:

Would you normally expect to get any sort of authentication papers when buying an older watch?
Do you normally still get the box/ booklet it came with - or do you tend to find most have been lost?
A couple of watches I'm looking at say the strap is "unsigned" - what is the significance of this?

If you do get box and papers they are usually a lot more expensive than a 'loose' watch. Plus they are a lot rarer so don't overly expect to find a lot of them.

Straps and bracelets may have been replaced over the years so just make sure it is a genuine one and not a cheap copy (of which there are thousands)...if it is a copy price accordingly.

Very few vintage Heuers come with box and papers. The boxes are obtainable but fetch up to £400. The majority of watches on Heuerboy will be without.

Not sure Vic Elford has any kudos with rolex collectors tbh.....nice history though although you'd have to be mad to buy it based on the worst pics I've seen!
