thinking of fitting a 911 engine in my 912,
is it worth it? do i need to upgrade rear suspension? have seen some 2.7 engines for sale from 74,75 911 models,is it an easy upgrade,i understand that i have to fit an oil tank under the rear wing and can see the factory pressings where it fits, also need to change my rev counter for a 911 unit.i just love the sound of a flat 6 and my dream car is a pre67 911.has any one done this,i see max at revival has a blue 912 that was changed to a 911 so im thinking along the same route.

Agreed, changing a 912 into a 911 is just wrong. 912s are great cars in their own right, so well balanced and pretty quick too when they're properly sorted. A 912 with a 911 engine would be neither one or the other. To fit a 911 engine in a 912 you need to cut out the 912 engine mounts on either side of the engine bay and weld in 911 ones so its also a pretty irreversable mod. If you're really intent on a six pot I'd suggest selling the 912 and purchasing a 911 or as suggested the 912 with an identity crisis at revival perhaps.

Timo is quite right here. I have had a few 911 and one 912 and I have to say how surprised I was at the feel and performance. Its quite different and great fun. If you want the sound , thats one thing , if its HP and speed then 911 is the way to go. I am only going back to a 911 having spent nearly two years restoring one and lots of complicated decisions !
I am a big 12 fan now !

cheers for your thoughts on this one, will probably stick with the flat4 and just rebuild it with bigger pistons and a new cam,it just sounds to much like my old beetles but thats cool.i will spend my money on a good repaint and fix all the little things that need doing, will keep you posted on my progress,i got some fuchs now so hopefully will get them on the car at the weekend.

Glad to help keep you on the straight and narrow!
912's are lovely in their own right - look at the car not as a 4 cylinder 911 but more the final incarnation of the 356!
remember, in period, a 912 wasn't that much slower on the twisty roads than a 911 (and was a lot more forgiving to drive than its six cylinder brother!)

Hmm, some 912's do sound a bit like bugs and others sound totally different, I'm sure there's a lot you can do with an exhaust if you wanted to. Mine doesn't sound like a bug at all, don't know whats different about it as it has a stock exhaust? If you really want to change the sound speak to Andy Prill, I heard a twin spark 912 engine running at his place - it sounded awesome (nothing like a beetle!)

my car runs a standard heat exchanger / Dansk rear silencer - sounds fine to me (although not as loud as my 914!)
I would either go for standard rear silencer or Bursch

twin plug 912 motors
Andy... look up Stan Pobjoy he is based in Australia and one of its most respected engine builders. I understand that he has been twin plugging type 1 motors and 356 for quite awhile. For the distributor he uses a Nissan Pintara? as it was originally a twin plug motor cost I think is around 900 pounds?
BTW great decision to stay with the four
