What color carpets would best suit this color combo?

Right i have now chosen the paint color for my Vintage racer, it is going to be Slate Grey after seeing one in the flesh it just looks right.

The interior seat and panel color is going to be a non original, but in my opinion looks awesome.

It is known as "Bomber Brown Waxed" leather, it looks distressed and very vintage and only gets better with age.

So my question is:

What color to have the carpet, it will be the original German sq weave.

Choices so far, Grey, Cream or Tan.

What do you think of those colors or do you have any other choices?

my friend has a (new) car which is black with saddle brown interior. He has black carpet in the car and it really makes the most of the leather pannels which are brown.. might be worth considering either black or a really dark grey to make the most of the brown?

Do you have any pictures of the fabrics as well as the bomber leather? I can imagine a bomber jacket etc but a picture tells a 1000 words.



Initially I would choose something
1. easy to maintain /keep clean
2. Something that complements the brown
3. Something that you are happy spending loads of time with

Hi, no its not that color or that type of leather.

I initially saw it in the latest copy of the 356 registry magazine March/April 09 page 35

There is a whole article on an outlaw coupe with speedster seats which is what i am having.

I dont have access to a scanner otherwise i would post a pic to show everyone.

Somebody suggested red to blend the grey in with the brown

I would say cream or light tan would suit any shade of brown leather.

Also looks good on this 48 model with reddy brown leather with brown inserts




or this brown leather interior from a 1947 Alfa 6C 2500 SS with light brown carpet

Slate grey is fabulous on a 356 and most would play it safe and go for a predictable red or black interior,

brown distressed leather for the seats and interior also sounds great but i think carpets will definitely work best in tan, or cream, definitely not grey, personally i would probably go for tan or cream edged in the same brown leather as the seats.

are you retaining original rubber floor mats on floor and centre tunnel or are you carpeting? for me carpet looks and feels more luxurious here especially for a daily driver and you can always put the rubber mats back in 5 minutes!!!

I think i am being pulled towards "oatmeal" at the moment, somebody said it makes the interior feel bigger, rather than a dark color, i tend to agree.

I had oatmeal in my 56 speedster and it looked good.

Good idea about edging the carpet in the same color leather.

The car never came with rubber mats, and i dont like them as it makes the car feel quite agricultural, and is this will be a daily driver, i am sticking with just carpets, with over mats in same material.

I think another colour would cloud the overall look.

I'd personally go Charcoal with the carpets. They will blend with the body colour and allow the leather to stand out. Possibly edge the carpet in the leather colour.

I often wear a Charcoal Helmut Lang Suit with a brown beige turtle neck but always dress it with black accessories (belt and boots) - works wonders!

I originally thought maybe very dark grey, but i had a 57 coupe with red leather and black carpets and it did make the interior feel alot smaller than it actually was.

I totally understand your thinking, but in the Registry magazine where i originally saw this type of aged waxed leather, those speedster seats were backed in oatmeal and it did look very good.

I dont need to make a decision for at least another 4-6wks so still enjoying all feedback i can get

Hi Bootsy havnt met you but nice to hear you like your Helmut Lang!!

A light color such as oatmeal will definitely make the interior feel more
spacious i have oatmeal in my car and am also in the process of having carpets made to replace the rubber mats, i agree rubber feels too agricultural and for me a bit too beetle like,

i also think the 356 ivory switchgear, door handle escutcheons, gear lever etc will coordinate much better with the oatmeal carpets

Going Audi slate grey with mine as soon as the Golfs finished, but keeping the red leather/red carpet combo with just the poverty spec rubber mats on the floor... will be soft-touch rubber dipping a spare set of toggles and switches in matt black too.

Slate grey seems very now doesn't it?

slate grey is a wonderfull colour, teamed with red interior will be fantastic!!

rubber mats are of course original spec but very utiltarian, sadly my cars have been replaced with non original pattern rubbers and dont think RHD replacements are availible so have chosen to go with more luxurious replacement carpet, my choice---- as the missus requested!!!
