RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH: 964 left me stranded

Hello everyone,

As someone who, grudgingly and relunctanty, is driving a 964, I can only say that my 720 miles/week experience was not good as SHE LEFT ME STRANDED.

Today, the second time this week, the car cut out whilst driving. I was luckely on an A road, had quite a lot of progress so I pressed the clutch and I could coax into a layby.

The car started after perhaps 3 minutes.

This evening, after surgery in the middle of blooming no where, the car wouldnt start. There is an original Porsche immobiliser on the vehicle, as well as an after market alarm system.

Now, once the immobiliser is disabled and you engage the contact, there is a "trrrticktickticktickTrrrrrticktick" noise audible from, what seems, the top of the fan. If you feel it, there seems to be something knocking, not engaging, misfiring? I can also smell a bit of an acrid smell as if something electrical is short fusing.

Does this sound familiar? Could anyone please advice? I'm on a bunk bed and tomorrow the car will be recovered to a specialist! Needless to say, She who must be obeyed isnt that happy either!

I do not like it already, aside from being too heavy, too truck like, too comfortable a la 928 GT, too wide, too look-at-my-turbo-hips, too torquey and too supple to drive and too leathery and too limited and too electronicy and and and.

hi bert possiby your dme relay located in front boot at bulkhead infront of steering wheel, porsche imobilisers can be a problem at this age also , have you got 2 chips try the other peter

Dammit, Bert. I feel I'd like to help a fellow DDK-er out of his misery. Just send it over to me and you'll never feel the pain of driving a 964 again. You can even laugh when I break down!

If the noise is a rapid staccato sound when trying to start but the engine is not turning over then either the battery is not holding charge (they can fail suddenly like that) or possibly the battery earth lead may be faulty - it may look ok and be tightly connected but they have a known history of failure and Porsche changed it to a different type.

I'm perfectly allright with Porsches without any electronic gadgetry, thank you very much.

Besides, just helped a mate who was stuck with his mk V GTi in The Park. Easy to get unstuck:disable all the electronics and in seconds we were away!

Stupid nanny electronics, stupid things that go wrong etc etc etc.

Looking forward to driving that SC to europe tomorrow.

You're right Bert - I've driven a few 'normal' 964s - mostly C4s, an not long ago also a C2, and they're crap. They have that distinct lardy, thudding, dull feel that so many other early-1990s cars had. If you want to kill it, I know a good flooded road not far from my place.

How dare that 15 year old car let you down. My 20 year old 964 has silencer bypass, eibach springs and bilstein shocks, RS geometry and I love it. Neutral, full of feel, great noise and fast. It has never stranded me in 8 years. It has ABS, awd, heated seats, and aircon, super fast wipers and good cabin ventilation/demist..so it is a perfect 170mph family car.

Edit - I think its pretty, too.


The C4 left the factory to be soft and understeer, with a crazy high front ride height, but set them up right and they are a joy - after all the 964RS is just an optimised C2. I'm not a fan of the wide body variants of any 911 either btw, though.

Thank you for your pm and your advice.

I'm going to take the car to a specialist for a check up but also wanted to have a few pointers of what it could be- there are loads of "issues" with this car which doesnt make my experience a good one.

Unfortunately the car threw the toys out of the pram before I could pick up the phone.

DME, new battery, check up....But one step at a time and all.
