This thread has got me gripped. Cant wait to see the outcome. Not sure if i'd have the patience required.

Cheers Dave - but I don't need any more pressure ! Seriously though, having a thread to update does help with the motivation.orkneydave wrote:This thread has got me gripped. :
At first I thought you meant the patience waiting for me to finish. Then I re read it - I don't know if I've got the patience. Not sure that that's the word -what I need is persistence.Cant wait to see the outcome. Not sure if i'd have the patience required.
Hopefully there will be a development over the weekend - I'm acquiring some bodywork to use as a donor for some of the most manky bits.
So no progress - just more stuff.

Wuurrrgghhh - what happened ? I've been a bit busy so apologies if anyones been waiting for an update. And apologies especially to someone on here - near Leicester I think - who I promised to buy a bonnet from. I'll apologise in person one day.
Firstly what did happen - well after a flurry of activity on the car I reached a critical point with my business which precluded everything else, I had to spend money on the house and then all the other things to do with life intervened together. So progress on the car stopped as it slowly disappeared under 'stuff' again plus I was having a crisis about whether I was doing the right thing anyway. Also I was spending FAR TOO MUCH time on DDK - it's too nice a place to be. So I shut the garage door and stopped surfing. As much.
However, and I'm not quite sure how, but 11 months later the garage is now semi organised, there is no 'stuff' at all on the car, I'm re-motivated and I've made some progress although it's still in the wrong direction i.e. taking bits off. If nothing else my car should serve as a warning of what not to buy. I'll post some scary pictures soon - winsdscreen frame and scuttle in particular.
I know I've been away a long time 'cos Helen's car was very pretty in blue and orange last year and now it's a white one. What happened there ?

Here are some pics to scare you if there's any bubbling around your screen/scuttle area.
Left hand side,

Right hand side

The red scuttle came from half a bodyshell which Ian Gunney gave to me (thanks Ian). I've been cutting that up as
an education in how they're built and how they rot. Some pieces may actually be salvageable and re-used in mine
at a later late.
Here's what's left at the moment - I've taken the wings, the scuttle and the windscreen frame off so far.

The screen frames are both badly perforated at various points and obviously they are far worse at the bottom edge.
Many teeners have nightmare stories about hell holes but given that the scuttle/screen frame is such a large and
fundamenetal component I think people should be more worried about corrosion in this area. Any comments from
those who have been there already ? Next job is to strip the dash and see exactly what horrors are waiting
underneath. If the rot extends to the door pillars I may have to do the sensible thing.
Talking of hell holes mine looks like this.

I only dropped the engine out last night so I've not had a chance to climb in and give it a proper bashing but it does
seem surprisingly solid so far. There is a big hole in the bulkhead - right in the corner - but there's no obvious signs
of acid damage so hopefully somebody's foresight in moving the battery to the boot has saved me one major exercise.
That's it for a while - again - until I look under the dash/scuttle - and then it's make or break time. (I know -
YOU think I'm there already)
If there are any salvageable parts of the red shell once I'm finished with it they will be passed on FOC to a DDKer.
If anyone has any shells/part shells with salvagable panels please let me know.
Cheers

Here's what I found when I lifted the carpets on mine:Bewildebeest wrote: And as for this –
What for –

And closer up you can see that the clutch cable tubing has been held onto it's mounting point with a jubilee clip. I'm going to leve it like this as I carried out a similar repair (i.e. clamping two perpendicular tubes together with a jubilee) as a temporary get by fix on my beetle seat several years ago and it has never failed since.
So if the welds fail and the jubilees don't I'm sticking with the one that works.

Rob,
Don't worry, it's not a problem. I know it looks pretty horrible but actually the fix works and the hole was useful to see the condition inside the tunnel and give me access to fill it up with waxoil!

I've been a bit busy - busy working and to a lesser extent playing with this thing - but I am making progress, albeit still going in the wrong direction i.e. taking things off rather than sticking things back on.
[/img]
As well as all the rot I have discovered a bit of accident damage on one corner so that is to be first job - cut away the bent and rotten parts and then make the little bit on the right fit the big bit on the left.
If you think I'm slow.....well 'we' celebrated our 20th anniversary in May and I've done more in the last 18 months than in the previous 18 years so I'm relatively happy. Just trying not to think about how far still to go and how much needs to be spent.

I thought i had a lot of work to do on mine!!
Fair play to you, looks like you are really going to bring one back from the dead.
I'm so glad i was not the only one to find a hose clip holding the clutch tube in place... mine was secured through the floor... then rtv'ed in place.... nice. Bashed a 1" strip of sheet steel round some bar, straightened out the ends and super welded it to the floor...voila, what the factory should have used to hold it down...
Good luck. Keep at it... like i should be.. back to the garage i go...
