Engine work in Brighton?
hi,
Can anyone recommend a place to have work done on a 356/ 912 engine in the Brighton area?
I have a clutch and flywheel to replace, which I dont want to do myself.
Dan
(Jason- could you do it?)

doubt it 912- this Jason is Rocket280 on here.... an old college mate and VW extraordinaire !!
I'll look up the other two- cheers guys..
I need to put the 912 into the 356- so I need a totally new flywheel put on the crankshaft.
Im worried about making sure its all torqued, sealed and 'balanced' as best as poss.
Im more body than mechanical, and I can see my effort ending up with the engine flywheel flying out and down the m25

hi dan,
you need to borrow or buy a piece of kit like in the picture below, this way you can achieve the correct torque you need. 350ft lbs which is loads more than most torque wrenches go up to. This piece of kit triples the amount of torque so a normal torque wrench can be used. You also need the correct shim size so you can set the end float with a dial gauge this is between 0.0045 and 0.007. because you are mating a different flywheel to that engine you may need to get a few different size shims. you will also need to secure the engine to the bench to stop it moving. I have not got one of these and tightening the flywheel is the last job I need to do on my engine. So if you find one let me know and then I will use it and do the job on your engine for you. It is also a vw tool so someone who uses this site may have one. Sorry for the bad picture but I could not find a picture of anyone using one on a flywheel.
cheers jay

Those flywheel locks are ok for some jobs, but just look at the amount of metal around the case at that mounting point, and watch it bend as you tighten it to 350! I have a length of angle iron about 5 feet long with a plate welded on the end with a set of holes that match up with the clutch bolts, the angle runs along the floor and hold the flywheel really well!

Hi
that flywheel lock sounds rather like mine except mine features a sodding great peice of box section and I'm with your thinking entirely ,by holding the flywheel itself you don't put any horrid stress where you don't want it and my torque wrench is of comedic proportions .
yours Bill.
