So, that's the good news. The heads are off and cleaned and will probably have new valves and guides fitted. Hopefully tomorrow the barrels will come off so that we can see the state of the piston rings. Then we can decide just how extensive the rebuild is going to be before I finally get the 912 on the road again.

... that's right - a burnt out exhaust valve!

Nige and I were both saying this..Martin ..drop that bloody engine and take the heads off!! you might find alot of simple things wrong with it, plus you can take the cylinders off and change the rings and do alsorts from there for under £250 not the correct way to do it but a way to keep the motor going for a few more years giving you space to get saving for a all singing all dancing 130BHP 912 motor..
Ok so what you doing about the rings.. look at the factory book measure then measure again if they an't broke don't fix them..
while all that lot is off the engine do some oil leak probs
Change the seals to the oil cooler.
change the copper gaskets to the base of the cylinders
replace the rubber plug on the heads
you should have it back on the road by next week!! ready for the Boxing day Classic car meet at Wickham Fareham or the one out nr Hook Basingstoke..

Why do you say that about the rings? I was thinking about changing them anyway and reboring the barrels because it was using quite a bit of oil and smoking over 80mph before I lost the compression. I don't want to do anything that isn't really needed though, so would welcome some further thoughts...

Spoke too soon. One of the pistons was cracked. So, that'll be new valves, pistons, liners etc etc.

Martin it's the old adage of where do you stop..
the wise man does a full rebuild but at a cost..
the cleaver man only does what is needed and can justify what doesn't.
I only knew 2 poeple who could do that.. One was John Lucas and the other is Studder man..
and they can only do this because they have learnt the hard way when parts where cheap..
OK
Anything you do to the car now is always a risk but one you have to work out you can take.. most of us do..
The new valve is needed ok hey ho you can find s/h ones but don't take the risk.. Piston hmmm not good you can look out for S/H set or ask Barry Curtis or the Studder man if he has one.. they prob will
then you can match them all up.. it's not the end of the world and can be fixed the piston prob was caused by the valve and some where it's good to hot.. prob at higher speeds..
it's still all very fixable for sensible money to tide you over till you afford the time and money to do a big rebuild..
so you don't need a set of 4 p/c sets.. just one that will match the set up have and the size..I would have asked John for you but he's no longer with us.. RIP John..

Well, looks like I'm going to bite the bullet. Well, halfway down at least - going to go for all new valve set and some Shasta pistons and barrels. Then we'll see what else is wrong/broken when we split the casing...
