I guess I need to find a cheaper sort of plastic.

Paul - they're easy enough to make ...

I cut a circle from textured black ABS (same material I use for RS LWT door panels) & glue a short length of (80mm diam from memory) acrylic (perspex) tube onto the back (using a hot glue gun) - this provides an ideal 'push-fit' into the dash hole.

I don't think that qualifies as being a cheapskate - I see it as a good test of your sanity! You could always sell a kidney or something

I've seen one or two of these for sale on eBay before - but Andy's suggestion seems the best bet.
