914/8

i'm really interested in these cars - but does anyone have any details about how they fitted such a long engine into a 914 - for example did it all fit without major chassis mods? - has anyone ever built a replica?

The 8 cylinder race engine was not much larger than the the 6 only 5 inches longer, which reduces the rear boot space. Therefore not an insurmountable challenge to fit.
Only 2 built (one Targa roofed, one steel as per 916 albeit with sunroof) , 10.5-1 Compression, 0-60 = 6.0 sec, Max 250km/h, weight 1050kgs!

Personally I have never read of a 914/8 replica (916 replicas, Yes), that is apart from 914 V8 conversions!!!!!

I guess people are put of by the scarcity/price of suitable engines which were race car only engines.

The 908 flat eight was originally built with being used in a series production chassis in mind.
On page 553 in book 2 of Ludwigsen's Excellence there is a drawing of a 914/8 which never got any further than on paper.
If in 1971/2 Piech was unable to get the 916 past the costing and marketing guys,then how could he manage it with a 918 ?
Never mind - the RS of '73 proved them all wrong !!

Those are the flux capacitors -I notice in Picture 16 there is what looks like an eberspacher petrol heating system fitted behind the petrol tank bulk head -guess no one wanted to fabricate flat 8 heat exchangers then




(I reckon they're fire extinguishers really)
