DDK - Die Deutschen Klassiker

It seems (according to Ian at PCGB who has been uber-helpful) that my car was built on 2nd October 1967. They made 5 Sportos that day for the UK market.

Prior to this, they made 3 Sportos for the UK market. So the car is the 5th - 8th oldest UK Sporto. (5th as two Ts were made on Oct 2 and mine is the later chassis number)

Late July - 1 Sporto 911L
September 1st - 1 Sporto 911T
October 1st - 1 Sporto 911L
October 2nd - 1 Sporto 911S, 2 Sporto 911L, 2 Sporto 911T (the second of which is mine)

My guess is that short of seeing the build numbers, we'll never get more accurate than 5th-8th

Lord alone knows how many of the other 7 still exist (as Sportos). Anyone any ideas how I'd find out?

Well there you go - two more Sportomatics from that list. Fantastic. Woznot's car is one of the 2 911L Sportos built on October 2nd and Philip's car is the 911L Sporto built in late July. Interesting there is note against Philip's car that just says "Experimental Car".

Yup, OYT 911F or 11810056 was, according to a letter I have from John Aldington, collected from Zuffenhausen by him and had been used for 'experimental purposes'. She was a widely used press car (I'll try and find some images but check out one of Jenk's books and the Car article on the L I'll try and post). A fax from (the late) Olaf Lang claims she was the first RHD Sporto made. I was led to believe she was a proto of the Sporto in RHD form AND a proto of the L (she retains a number of '67 model year features - door handles, mirror - all validated by period photos).

Aldy said that Vic Elvington had been given her to use to travel to races.

She was sold to Les Horrocks in 1972 who kept her until his death - I'm therefore the fourth owner (Porsche, a clothing company for a month, Les Horrocks and then me) and Robert Gant agrees with me that the 28,000 miles showing on the odo is from new based on the extensive work he's done on her

Interestingly when I spoke to Vic Elford he explained that he liked the Sporto so much he bought one (discounted) with his own money, a LHD car for his own use.

There is a pic of your car in the Chris Harvey Porsche 911 book on p 107 in front of a very old nice manor house.
The colour looks more purple but it could be the photography on the day.
Your 911 L looks ab fab.
I use a pic of it as a screen saver from time to time(if its ok)

I've had some email contact with Vic about his Sporto - he told me he preferred staying in a Caravan at race meetings rather than hotels that might be miles away from the circuit. He towed his caravan all round Europe with his sportomatic equipped 911.

I'll have to dig up the emails...
