One last thought is that the cable runs through a steel tube in the LH rear quarter panel. Have you got the snapped cable so you can tell were it is broken? An option would then be to cut into the tube just before it turns to enter the engine bay, find the end of the cable and pull with mole grips. ...

Drop the engine out: then you'll be able to get to the back of the latch :( :( Supposedly this catch is designed to release when the cable is broken so have you tried pushing down hard on the engine cover to try and give the latch some freedom to retract and then pull up? Modern Haynes manual version: 1. Disconnect battery 2. Remove gearbox 3. Remove clutch 4. Fit new clutch 5. Refitting is the reverse of removal.... From memory I'd say they are around 2mm thick. If you use your old ones as templates consider that they are slightly larger than the original (by about 1mm) around the outer edge, presumably to let the valve cover 'bite' into the silicon. I've successfully nailed my rocker cover oil leaks with the silicon gaskets. I got mine from Pelican:

Brave pill has been taken so went for tapping the carb bodies to except some 'plugs'..... :shock: Cut and shut M8 cap head in the flow adjuster hole and some M5 screws in the cylinder feed pipes. Flow adjuster hole took an M8 tap perfectly, the feed pipes had to be drilled out, they were just slight...

Sounds like the way forward, particularly as it means I don't have to try finding a solenoid :) At least I've discovered what that random wire in the valley plate does! (or rather doesn't...) You'd need to fit a pressure sender to the engine rather than just a low pressure switch, but I believe the wiring is the same. With a sender you get a precise change in resistance and hence it can drive the meter, the light just runs off the low pressure switch which is on/off. I used to run just a...

I think everyone was just too scared to comment, the sight of major corrosion has a profound effect on us early 911 owners.... :)

We tend to go a bit quiet when we realise that this could be our car by the next MOT....
