Re: Assessing an unknown engine

Rob, Have you tried any of that FREEZE OFF penetrating oil at all? Normally works quite well, and for the price might be an idea before you weld your nuts together? There are others on the market, but Eurocarparts sells this stuff......... https://www.eurocarparts.com/p/normfest-super-crack-ultra-i...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

I pulled this ancient protractor from the depths of my measuring/marking drawer. Upon spotting my name scruffily scratched into the surface, I reflected how I was just a boy when I etched it there with my compass. The compass was part of a set my dad got me for my birthday and one of my most treasur...

Here's where I eased off the corners. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240526/f41e1dfbfe23e79f76e7e97326d1bd97.jpg I seated a valve to confirm the contact area is bigger than spec. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240526/35448cfd3441f4601d3026d2ef2443e9.jpg The intake studs look great. https://u...

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Do you not have a cheap bore scope / endoscope? Ideal for poking in a spark blug hole to see which valve is open: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inspection-Depstech-Waterproof-Borescope-Smartphone-Black/dp/B01NBFTAHE/ Also good for finding lost items, looking inside sills, etc. The cam has a punch on the ...

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

I'd compare that spark plug with others from the same engine, taken at the same time. I agree this is probably limited to the left bank, and probably just to once cylinder, but it'd be good to be sure before you invest too much work in that hypothesis. I think the tappet hypothesis is a good one. My...

Re: ideal port size for a 2.2 with mod solex cams?

I noticed this week that the head intake ports are 32mm but the mfi stacks are tapered from 35mm to 37.5mm. With the throttle bodies tapered the most steeply, from 32 to 35. So it's designed with steadily accelerating air, which I presume is a deliberate part of the design to maintain momentum of t...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

Sorry the photos are poor but I polished off the ridges making the curve constantly smooth. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240525/25de60bc1d5b7b1be32004afc73d92d8.jpg And the same where the seat meets the aluminium. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240525/96014804247aff2060c0ca92834b34af.jpg T...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

Evidence continues to point to the engine having recently been rebuilt before it failed. One or two of the valves look like they might be new. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240525/d8f0fba79a2a51772024626cf91c4e84.jpg https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240525/848175d2d021e402a2a960b19b9532c8.jpg...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

I used to use one of those compressors, so awkward esp when re-assy of the collet halves. Use my motorcycle cheapie off ebay since (last 2 re-builds) and so much better, lighter and slimmer. As to the seats: I would not wright-off the seats until clean, clean the respective valves and do a simple l...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

I don't think this clamp was perfect for these particular cylinder heads but it looks like it'll get the job done. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240524/a841d3e7283b3472fa93a60ebc2287b9.jpg What struck me on this first exhaust valve was just how tight and smooth it was coming out. I was expectin...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

If you are worried take it to a reputable machine shop to check. I’m not sure even the best home methods will be close enough to either confirm or deny. I'm not worried - I think it's probably straight and true. I certainly won't have the experience of a machine shop who measure such things regular...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

Hi Rob, I think a custom machined straight bar and plastigauge might be a better way to check this. Do you really think it could now be out of true after line boring from factory? Or are you concerned that some apertures are worn due to spun bearings? Cheers Hi Chris, thanks for the suggestion. I w...

Re: Assessing an unknown engine

It's not measuring straight here due to me not being an octopus, but I measured the bore tonight and got a consistent 61.95 for each diameter in the case from end to end. And also best as I can tell with a straight edge, they're in perfect line. I think I need to put the case together to measure pro...
