Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Yes that’s what is consoling me as well. Like I said I’m not going to have a chance to get on with it until the weekend but I just popped out and took a pic of the adjusters Right hand bank are all pretty level But the left hand exhaust ones, not so much https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240528/f8e...

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Ok so when I did the tappets when the engine was out I was in a quandary about finding TDC. I’ve got the Z1 mark on my pulley so that’s fine it’s just that I can’t easily tell if it’s on the compression or exhaust stroke I don’t have a distributor any more so using the position of the rotor arm is a...

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Thanks Tim. However they actually are new spark plugs. That soot is after two trips of about 5 miles.

Out of interest what hotter plugs did you switch to?

1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Thanks - they are both interesting thoughts and things that I can check on I think the HT leads are OK. They are perhaps 10 years old and seem to be good quality and in good condition. They are also producing spark to the spark tester I agree that if we’ve got fuel before the injector and spark in t...

1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Thanks - might leave that until tomorrow (though I’m getting better at removing the fuel rails now) I”m not sure it’s that whole bank - that wouldn’t explain why number 2 was 20 degrees cooler than 1 and 3 - to me that would be more of an indication that 2 isn’t firing but 1 and 3 are and the cooler...

1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

So fuel then. I know there is fuel in the fuel rail (would t start otherwise) I removed the left hand fuel rail https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240525/5753eafabdd2bf2da5c67851f06d63bd.jpg Unlikely/impossible to be a block in these holes as they are so big, but I blew them through with an airline ...

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

OK so then I connected an inline spark tester to make sure spark was getting through

https://youtu.be/f6xSVKkzPuM?si=59JXx3rPc2hOa9Aw

So it is producing spark to the plug

I suppose fuel is next

Re: 1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

Ok so I took no 2 plug out https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240525/89a59d417a4f0d7f693d8a8118fbb351.jpg Bearing in mind this was brand new and I’ve driven it round the block a couple of times it seems unusually sooty. So I grabbed one of the previous plugs, cleaned it up and put it in. Started it ...

1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

I’d worried that the ECU problems hadn’t been fully fixed but thinking about it, the ECU sends a signal to one bank or the other - if it was ECU related then I’d be getting nothing on one bank. So it’s fuel or spark on No 2 It’s got a new loom, new injectors and new spark plugs. I say new, but the s...

1987 3.2 Carrera Backdate project - Sladeys hotrod

OK so the saga continues… The new injector loom arrived. However it wasn’t marked as to which set of injectors was on which side I referred to the wiring diagram https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240525/23bca082058667a024b75aa783757f22.jpg And peeled back the boot on one of the connectors.
