Gearbox out, which VW parts fit?

[img]file:///Users/simonharding/Pictures/iPhoto%20Library/Masters/2012/06/24/20120624-220031/DSCN2484.JPG[img][/img]/img] Well, for those following my gearbox maladies the engine came out, followed by the gearbox, along with several bodges along the way in respect of fuel lines, wires, cables and li...

Re: VW Box into 356

I have an update re the 356 transmission, I decanted the gear oil last night and in the bottom was a pin, approximately 6mm or so in diameter. It looks like its probably the one out of the planet gear shaft so as the bit of tooth I found is straight cut rather than helical I'm hoping that its one of...

Re: VW Box into 356

I realise that accuracy is the order of the day and as yet I do not have a beetle box to compare with the porsche one, so couldn't comment on driveshaft locations. What I did like was the way in which the guy built a plywood jig around the box, removed the 741 trans then fitted in the beetle box to ...

VW Box into 356

Some of you may have read my other post about the bother I'm having with my rear end, not the result of a dodgy Balti but probably the result of fifty years of abuse...... Before you ask, I'm 39. Perhaps I should explain. I think that I may be in for a nasty shock when I eventually crack open my tra...

Re: 356 gearbox woes....

Dave, thanks for the welcome! I'm based near to Wakefield in West Yorkshire. I'm hoping to move some cars around in the garage this week so I can pull the engine and then the box out of the car. I really want to see whats gone wrong in there. I may need a CW&P yet so any leads on one would be ve...

Re: 356 gearbox woes....

Well, it's a funny story really, like buses you wait ages for one then two come along together!! Obviously it would have been rude of me to decline the offer of the second car. Before anyone asks though, that ones for the wife. After wanting one for nearly twenty years or so you'll need to be a real...

Re: 356 gearbox woes....

Wonderful things, magnetic sump plugs. I expect that the pinion looks like Shane Macgowans gums!!!!!! Slight hyperbole really, took out the plug and stuck on the end was a collection of iron filings, with the tip off a pinion tooth stuck in the middle, rather like those chocolate buns with a bit of ...

356 gearbox woes....

Hi. I'm new here, so please be gentle with me! After about twenty years of fancying a 356, I recently bought two UK RHD 356s from long term ownership, an early BT5 and a late BT6. Both cars really need restoring, although the later one has an MOT and made a 300 mile journey home OK (wife enjoying th...
