Re: Difference between Porsche and VW 1.7?
I've got some additional info from the swedish VW forum. The 914 oil dip stick is in the same location as the one for 411/412 sedans, just next to the breather tower, and pointing straight up. On the same engine, with the same engine code but installed in a 411/412 Variant the dipstick is located in...

Re: Difference between Porsche and VW 1.7?
The 1.7/1.8 heads are identical for VW and 914. It's only the 2.0 914 heads that are different.Mr Pharmacist wrote:The cases are the same. The differences are in the heads and pistons etc.
Any reference on 914 pistons being different? By the looks of the engine codes it seems that have the same compression etc.

Re: Difference between Porsche and VW 1.7?
Green Ernie, do you mean there's a way to look at the engine number rather than the letter code? Pretty sure I have a W engine, which is available both in VW and in 914. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/engine_letters.php So, apart from ancillaries (tin, alternator, flywheel) there's nothing...

Difference between Porsche and VW 1.7?
A long time ago I bought a complete 1.7 that came out of a 914, thinking it'd be an easy swap into my 912. Man was I wrong... Anyway, I have been trying to figure out for years now if the 914 1.7 engine actually is different from the VW 1.7 in any way, except for: - sheet metal - fly wheel Are...

Re: Back in beige
I am sensing a solution here. Can't believe these are available from Porsche. Did you note the part number?jamie wrote:...the crossbar is definitely not a 911 crossbar.
It is, however, available from Porsche for fifty quid (which is less than it cost me to make mine).

Re: Back in beige
Look at this:
Apparently the pic is from a PET so if anyone has these to hand maybe we could confirm that the brackets that bolt to the engine is the same for all years, and that the early crossbar is in fact a 911 crossbar.

Re: Back in beige
Recent purchases, with numbers: Two rubber blocks. These hold the gearbox in place. There should be more of them holding the engine in place too, but I'm using a home-designed, laser-cut engine mount with no rubber blocks. I hope it works because these fuckers cost £60 each and there are another fi...

Re: seat
Wowser!
Surely that's been reupholstered, and the fibreglass repainted? I can't quite tell (on my phone) but if it's a pristine original seat it's amazing, and a bargain.

I looked at pivot pins last week, and Rosepassion.com etc all seemed to have them. You can prob buy them from your local Porsche centre. Cheap too.

Re: Bonnet Shocks
To recap on this subject; I took the car to work today (I never drive to work. Stockholm City is only marginally better for cars than London City...) and when hitting a bump in the road the engine lid popped up! The HD strut has thrown the lid alignment off and now this. HD strut will need to go. Wi...

Re: Seat runners swb ( the bit that bolts onto the car)
Are 1968 runners a one-year-only item? Or are they similar throughout all SWB years?

Re: Headrests.....
I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but I think that all recaro bucket seats were supplied with peanut headrests. So model year of the car doesn't come into play at all. Happy to be proven wrong.

Re: Bonnet Shocks
I just fitted HD gas struts all round. Works a treat at the front and was quick/easy to fit. I did it alone but having a helper hold the bonnets really would have...well...helped. One thing I don't like is that the strut for the rear lid is so strong that it twists the lid and the OK panel alignment...
