Re: Rolls-Royce pre-eminent Aero Engine Maker and their cars
Too true Darren, to hand over a magnificent hand built engine and have it mass produced must have been fraught on both sides. Two very different approaches to the issues involved. The detail is in a way now moot as the success of the design and the ability of the teams to produce such a seminal engi...

Re: Rolls-Royce pre-eminent Aero Engine Maker and their cars
When it came to the final torque of the injector heads, I said without thinking that the setting should be “5 white knuckles” (which is how I’d be taught in training). This was a whole new world to the American engineers who needed a data sheet to satisfy their, yes sir, no sir, 3 bags full sir, me...

Interesting view on the re-design of the Merlin by Packard.. I apologise for any error, it has been 20 years since I last worked on a Merlin, however I seem to recall that the Packard one had more consistent and tighter tolerances than the Rolls Royce version, a function of the mass production techn...

Re: Rolls-Royce pre-eminent Aero Engine Maker and their cars
Very little mention of the 'pre-eminent areo engine' part of the thread title, so as an excuse to post the picture again here's a Merlin in action! https://c1.staticflickr.com/6/5743/30754136336_0e2a9a3f3c_b.jpg PL983, a PR XI model, crashed in France in 2001, with the pilot losing his life. Re: Rolls-Royce pre-eminent Aero Engine Maker and their cars
All interesting stuff.... Can we add to the Olympus post that it was originally a Bristol Aero Engines design (then BSEL)? A number of variants pre Concorde were in use (Vulcan bomber) and it achieved supersonic flight (TSR 2) with reheat prior to the 593 version used on Concorde. The 593 version wa...

Great thread... and fantastic stories... Mine started seeing my grandfather's early 70s metallic green, black interior Alfa 1750 GTV in his garage. He was, by then too ill to drive it and yet not prepared to sell it...my grandma had a gal blue with tan interior Mini Clubman, drove it like she stole ...
