Clutch or gearbox troubles

Post by Bury73 »

Over the past six months my gearbox has started to become vague.
Basically revs need to be matched prescisely before changing (i.e. if you engage first when cold over 2000 rpm it won't go in, if you change up under acceleration it also grinds )

Occaisonally when changing from first to second under load there is a metal on metal sound and the linkage feels as if it is dropping violently  .

If I depress the clutch for a long period in London traffic there is a noise like the thrust bearing bending :(

The car has covered 120,000 with no historical evidence of a clutch change or gearbox rebuild...
Should I ignore it and drive the car gently like my wife?
I am planning to replace the clutch for peace of mind next month, am I being rash?
What specialist tools if any will I need to do this?

Thanks in advance for you comments

Hi

It sounds like you may well need a new clutch, but it could be an oil or synchro problem as well. I would try adjusting the clutch, changing to Swepco oil, then if the problem persists take the car to a specialist who can give you an opinion as to what needs doing

Thanks Nick

I have just booked it in to Parr's for a report on clutch and geerbox.

P.S If it is not too serious I will be looking at getting my Fuch's anodised in March, have you got a waiting list at the moment?

Parr seem to have a good reputaion. You could bring it into my workshop just south of Horsham if you want a second opinio.

There is no waiting list on rims at the moment at the moment, I have 2 sets being polished now, and I have 2 sets of to be cleaned and machined in the next couple of days
