I have a 73T 'hot-rod' modified car since 1988.
It came to me with a flat glass aftermarket tilt sun roof which flattened the original roof.
I had to cut the hole even larger to get the roof 'dome' back to some curve and then fitted a Webasto fabric folding roof from an MGB GT but shortened to suit the 911 roof length.
The new (then) liner was installed and cut to suit the new frame.

This was when an old 911 was worth around £3000. The car was destined to be a road/hillclimb car which it was for 13 great years.

Today things are different and the sunroof insert is a bit tatty round the cut rear corners, so might be looking this winter to remove the sunroof and close the steel roof hole, new liner and all done.

There are 2 ways I think to do this;
1
Glue on a glass/carbon cap that goes from the screen to screen to side to side, repaint to the drip rails etc and do the lining. The cap joints on the A and C posts will show.
2
Find a steel roof from the right car and remove the skin from the car and the donor roof and get crimping and welding, paint and new liner.

I'm not new to these things, so confident I can do either.

A third way is to have a new cover professionally fitted! This is surprisingly expensive to get done.

Any thoughts?

I'd normally agree with option 2, but I love the canvas roof!

Irritatingly, I had a full roof 10 years ago, cut at the abc pillars and very clean.
Sold it £100…..
Canvas roof is very unique, and a new one is the quickest and simplest to do.
I have Aldridge Trimming on my doorstep, so could take the car to them to discuss.

Quite like option 2 for the challenge!

Personally I would close up the hole with a donor steel panel, liner and paint.

Go with a carbon roof.Ive fitted plenty of repair panels, and The carbon roof option is a breeze in comparison.I get mine from a guy in kent,made by an ex F1 Fabricator.Top quality.
One cut, and bond in.As opposed to a days welding (if you have a decent tig) Then trying to panel it, to remove distortion and a bucketful of filler to even it out.(See pics in my "Lightweight build" thread)

Back in the late 70’s I welded in a huge panel into the roof opening of my 1937 Ford Y Type hot rod.
The weld length was about 14 feet, by gas welding.
It was hard going but worked out well.
All these years later, I want an easier life!

The plastic bonded on cap seems the easiest way, Club Autosport close to me do one but pricey.

Easiest of all is a new soft covering, but costs the same.

Just my 'two pennyworth' but, unless you're planning on selling the car in the near future, I'd leave it as it is ...

It's had the fabric sunroof for the past 35+ yrs - & the ideal time to delete it would have been during it's renovation/respray a few years ago but you were adamant at that stage about retaining it - so why now ?

I get the impression that it's because you haven't got another project 'on the go' ...

Partly true, but…
The rear corners of the steel cross bar rusted through late last year, the top cover wrinkled.
Took it all apart, peeled off the rear cover off the steel and carefully welded it all up.
The cover was then re glued on but I could not get the cover neatly on around the corners, all a bit scruffy, so started to think about fixing it this winter.
Mind you the car is hardly perfect!

Missed a bit.
The reason why I didn't do the roof during the repaint a few years ago was the roof as great, and I had little time to get the car back into useable condition for the year ahead.

If the roof was tidy now, I would not be thinking of removing it.
