A question to satisfy my own curiosity

On a Porsche 911 , are there spot welds on the rear 1/4 panel just abobe the rear window surround, from approx where the rear window catch is, up to the rain gutter ?

Just looking at this pic from Nick's site, & I beleive I can see where these spot welds are ( top right of the photo, where the line between primer & metal is



Am I making sense?

Does this picture answer the question?

I think the spots you see are where a sort of shelflike flange is welded to the inner wing...I think this is supposed to stop dirt from the road getting into the roof!

Crap as usual for the era..

The rear quarter panel is a single sheet all the way to the roof...

You are probo correct. I have seen some spot welds on the exterior rear 1/4 panel that appear to refer to something welded behind.

I don't know if these helps but here's a new inner wing spot welded in and an original for comparison.

love these photos You get a real understanding of how the cars are put together when you see them stripped to this extent.

I'm afraid it is. Don't ask how much an inner wing costs. (or the two new outer ones that are now on top)!

Nick, I just have to ask! I have just bought the two outer wing panels but what looked to be 'fairly sound' on the inner wing turns out to be mostly rust held together by the plastic underseal , particularly in the area below the rear lights and the cross section behind the number-plate panel.

Knowing what I know now, if I was just starting this restoration, I wouldn't! Problem is that there is now so much time and money invested, I can't afford to stop........ Not sure of the logic there but I am sure you know what I mean.

Bob, did you get your wings from Mittelmotor in the end? Mine turned up in July after a few delays. The inner wing was about £1200+vat from Porsche. I had to wait 10 weeks I think (they quoted 12 weeks). Mittelmotor might be able to get them cheaper. Yours is the same story as mine, it looked sound and we didn't cost it into the job (most of the other stuff was forseen).

I've broken my golden rule now, I wasn't going to post any pics of my restoration until it was all over and my therapist says I'm well again. By the way, these pics are from June, the car's all back together now, just waiting for paint (and waiting... and waiting...)

Thanks Nick. Yes, Mittlemotor were slow but completely honest. A couple of times they came back to check that I understood the price and they kept me informed about delays. Certainly recommend them to anyone else.

I too hadn't costed for inner wings. Begining to understand why professional restorations cost so much.
