Hi,

I'm asking advice for a friend. He has a 1972 E which is in a Porsche specialist based in west London but they're having trouble finding someone who can fix the fuel injection pump and it's been some time apparently.


Does anyone know of anyone who might be able to help with this job?

Neil Bainbridge and Tuthill.

Used to be others, but had mine done decades ago now, place now closed I think, place in Northamptonshire.
Bainbridge look good, may be expensive.
Google will get you to them.

I’ve heard Michael Burgess is also excellent.

I can strip, repair and test MFI pumps, although usually I like to diagnose the engine complete first. More often than not there are more issues with the airflow metering at the throttle bodies (shaft and bore wear, linkage set-up etc) than any specific pump delivery problem.

Fred/Tower Bridge Diesels closed down a couple of years ago now.

Fred Pentecost is still working but from home in the north east of the UK. Still has all the correct factory gear for calibration. He restored a pump for me two years ago for my 2.2 S.

Pretty sure he's retired in the last 2 years.

I heard the same. His company was acquired by the SL Shop…

Go to Neil Bainbridge at BS Motorsport at Westcott. He has all the original Bosch rigs and parts to strip, rebuild and set up these pumps correctly. He can also do minor adjustments to the space cam to avoid top end lean for race engines. Beware of going to anyone who does not have the right gear as you will just be wasting your money. These mfi pumps need the right equipment to get the best out of them. Just don’t be in a rush to get it back from Neil!

I would advise caution to anyone reading this thread or with MFI issues of their own to assume that when they have a 'fuel injection' problem it necessitates an expensive pump removal, pump rig install, set-up and rebuild.

Having had the good fortune to drive a few of the cars owned by posters on this thread, I can recall one instance where the car was suspected as being 'down on power' due to an MFI issue. This turned out to be nothing more than an improperly set throttle position, a two-minute job to fix. Diagnosed in the car park of of the Porsche Club HQ in Morton-in-the-Marsh if I remember correctly.

I also recall doing some extensive investigation into another poster's poor-running MFI, which turned-out to be mostly down to an arc-ing rotor arm in the twin-plug distributor, and an intake manifold and port-sizing better suited for wide-open-throttle race applications, contributing to difficulties in part-load, light throttle AFR and charge-air volume control. Issues well beyond the delivery capabilities of a mechanical pump.

Having been in touch with the OP's friend to learn a little more about the actual issue that raised the question in the first post, there does not sem to be any firm data here that suggests there is a pump hardware problem at all, simply some rich running that needs the throttle butterfly shaft set-up and pump enrichment adjustment checked in the first instance.

If in-car throttle and pump adjustment successfully bring the fuel delivery back under control on all cylinders, it is very unlikely that there is any need to strip, rebuild and bench test the pump at all, saving the OP's friend some considerable time and expense.

Mike is correct, another issue can be fuel lines plumbed incorrectly. Sometimes it can be a simple problem.

Fred was working as a one man band from his home so as far as I was aware he was a sole trader with no "company" to sell. He does work for the SL Shop and had pumps from them when I visited him to collect my pump. I have Fred's telephone number if anyone needs it PM me.
