I need to buy a very good winter/ exterior quality car cover for my 1973 911 Coupe.

Hard to cut through the marketing hype from suppliers, so thought i would ask here for some real-world recommendations please.

It needs to really fit (not a one size fits all) and not flap about. Belly straps a must to keep the cover intimate to the car and cover the wheels too.

I have a Carcoon exterior design but last used it ruined the paint on the car.

Try Classic Additions, I had both an indoor and outdoor versions of their covers, really good quality.

Car covers seem like a great idea, but I've never been impressed. My 964 came with a 'good' one. And it probably is good. But even with an absolutely spotless car, it's going to pick up dirt somewhere and it's going to scratch your car. Outside? Strapped up tight it's still going to get caught by the wind. It's still going to move, rub, scratch, hold in moisture... Better to keep it inside, or under a carport that's well drained.

Why not use the garage
I found this picture and then remembered the boxter but surely no one is likely to nick a boxter or take its wheels but a 911 outside might be more tempting

Plan is to rebuild the 911s 3.2 engine this Xmas.
This needs one 1/2 of my double width, super short garage.

My usual source of storage is full for the winter with a waiting list…

So, plan B is to pull the engine, put the 911 securely away but in the open, hence the need for the cover for about 6 weeks.

A clean new cover on a waxed 911 should be ok, the car will be close to the house wall on one side.

The Lola would never survive a week in the open!

If you get this weeks Auto Express, it has just done a test on car covers (16th October edition)

Thank you, my brother in law has it every week so eventually when i see his I get a mound of them dropped on me...
The report is a good read, Halfords or Sealey seem he most convincing overall.

Plans for the 911 have now changed.

Engine staying as it is, big service on it and around the car in general (bushes etc) and fresh brake rebuild and disc's/pads etc.

I can do this little lot with it in the garage by moving the Lola out during the day to give room and get it all back in for tea-time.

There, another £57 saved to buy all the anti roll bar bushes.

Just out of interest how did the exterior carcoon damage the paint..I’ve been using one for the last few winters and the clearance around a small car like most classic Porsches is sufficient to make sure there is no contact or rubbing as with a conventional cover?

My experience of physical covers is that on modern cars with factory paint they are fine..no problems apart from the odd bit of localised light chafing which easily polishes out. On older classics that have been subject to paint you will get deterioration of all metallic surfaces and with paintwork possibly microblistering or worse.

Nothin beats a garage but if indoor storage is not available then I’ve had no such issues with the outdoor carcoon due to the constant airflow..

Micro blisters on top surfaces in particular, disc deep rust and most fasteners previously ‘bright’ went dull and a few rusty even.
