915 Gearbox Shift Coupling - talk to me......

Thinking ahead to the DDK Big meet in a few weeks I thought I should attend to a few jobs and give the yellow car a good run.
When I last drove it I recall thinking the gearshift was a little vague.
Anyway, took it out earlier today and the gears were hard to find. Clutch felt ok, I could get all the gears but it was hard work finding them and the gear stick felt bloody sloppy.
So after a bit of investigation today I found the bushes of the gear coupling are buggered - one had split and removed itself from the coupling. Obviously loads of sidewise play.
So.......
Buy a new coupling rather than replace bushes seems simpler?
Worth upgrading to something a bit more precise? One with solid bushes etc
Any good how to's on how to replace and then adjust?
Cheers

Over all these years, for road cars, I think original spec is the way to go

I upgraded to Superpro Powerflex bushings on all the cars.....Works great and feels so much better with no issues. Just be prepared to find some new swear words whilst trying to press them into the coupler (use a bench vice). Abit of a PITA, but straightforward enough

I fitted a Stomski coupler a couple of years ago and it is more precise but also noisier. The designed-in play in the standard/Superpro stops a lot of the NVH getting into the cabin. It depends upon what you want?

I like my Stomski coupling although I did fit SuperPro before & they were fine.
Be careful if pressing bushes into your original coupling, ensuring the couplng is appropriately supported. Not me, but I’ve seen a ciupling with a broken off ‘ear’

Have had Superpro bushes for 25 years, fit and forget.
Adjusting the position is absolute key and is a fine adjustment indeed.
When right it is great.
The slotted stock bushes give some room for the NVH to be 'lost' and adds to the fore/aft movement.
A great mod to help with the change precision is to fit superpro gearbox mounting bushes as it holds the box down mush tighter, but some in crease in NVH.

Pair of Superpro on route from DustyM
Seems like a sensible route to start with
Thanks for all the input

Also 'while there' check/replace the 2 bushes at the base of the gear shifter.
Every like helps.

Scroll down through this link to the YouTube vid for a lesson on how not to break the housing when removing the pin. It’s been around a while and the guy is no longer with us but it’s all valid.

With the bushes on route I’ve made a start on the coupling
In gear
Marked up for refitting to get it at least close to where it was
Removed and in the vice ready to knock that pin out
Swearing to follow
