Tyre sizing?

Hello,

Have no clue how this works, but?

I have 185/55s fitted to my car, I’ve noticed it’s riding a little high.

If I was to fit 185/70s would the wheel arches sit lower to the wheel?

Wheels are 15 in

Thanks Lee

.

The wheel arches wouldn't sit lower but there would be a smaller gap between the top of the tyre & the wheel arch.

The middle number is the percentage of the aspect ration of the tyre height, so 185 ’55’ means the height of the tyre is 55% the width of 185mm

185 ’70’ means the height of the tyre is 70% of the width.

So basically the 70 has a taller sidewall height than the 55, so will fill the wheel arch more.

and if you struggle to find a 185/70 in the price bracket you want , a 195/65 will give you there abouts the same tyre profile height.

I've run 195/65's on my car for 21 years

Been looking and if it’s definitely possible to run 195/65s I may option for Pirelli cinturato all season SF2 r15 95v XL tyres. £82 each.

Anyone tried them?

I’d only advocate for all seasons if you spend a lot of time driving at 7c or less. Otherwise it’s summers all the way.

I’m also in the 195/65 camp since I first bought the car. I’m sure the 185/70 fan boys will be along shortly :)

If it is of any use then the Auto Express covered the Pirelli P7 last year in a tyre test with 10 others...........may change your mind, in view of some of the others?

Hi

yes the 195/65 tyre will give the correct disameter, however it wont handle very well on your old car. the proper period 185/70R15 CN36 Cinturato is available and will compliment your car dramatically better.

yes the 911 SC fitted 195/65R15 on the front but the geometry of that car was very different to an earlier car. they did clever things to keep your footprint on the road, which doesnt happen on an older car. that 65% profile carcass is a very different thing. stick to the good stuff you will be happier about it long after you have forgotten your credit card bill

Dougal, the suspension on the impact bumper car is fundamentally the same me as the 73 car …

I don’t disagree the correct 185/70 is desirable especially aesthetically , but having run a quality 195/65 for over 20 years on my 73 2.4s it works really well on these cars . I don’t pussy foot about driving mine either as it is ragged on every drive out as I’m lucky as where I live I have great country roads on my doorstep.

…. One provisos… I did once try a lesser quality 195/65 brand and it was did upset the car and handling noticeably . I agree getting the right tyre is important
