20mm wheel spacers for 7R

Post by theorangeperil »

I had the rear wheels (Group 4 7R reps) off recently to put some new tyres on and found one of the rear 20mm hub-centric spacers had some quite significant cracking on one side.

Not sure about hosting the pictures I have, but these are the type of spacers.

I fitted these in 2016 and I would say I’ve done between 10-14,000 miles on them.

I was a little shocked to see these cracks. At the moment I can’t find the receipt so am not sure where I bought them from. Anyone had similar experience?

If you have some of these fitted please have a close look at them for safely.

Feeling next time I’ll go for the Porsche style with longer studs.

I seem to remember that James (hot66) had a similar problem with the bolt-on spacers on his 964.

I've used 15mm & 20mm bolt-on spacers on various early 911's over the years - TUV-approved versions bought from German suppliers - & didn't notice any problems but I didn't cover more than ~5k miles on any of them.

Thanks Andy.

So do you think the Porsche spacers with longer studs into the hubs are a better bet? I guess those were used on the 911R?

For me the bolt-on versions were much more convenient as they were quick to install/remove & if I was running 7R's again I'd be tempted to use some high quality ones but check them regularly.

However, I think only the 'slip-on' type along with longer wheel studs are allowed in competition so there must be a reason ...

Incidentally, in the UK, I have heard good comments about the bolt-on spacers from Jasmine Motorsport.
